I'm confused and have no idea what you're talking about, context?

Re: webcomics
i won’t defend the porn but even writers who are quite good (asimov, wildbow, rowling) suffer from writing the opposite gender the same as their own

Hmmm, I'd say Rowling is actually quite good at writing men, but I'm sure there are 100 examples to prove otherwise.
A couple of high points that aren't dwelled on:
* Harry's discovery that the pinnacle of his life has already been achieved as an infant, the resulting "Unearned" fame, and how he deals with it
* Harry's "Relationship" with his father, and the stoic way he has to throw away the one interaction they ever have (the time turner patronis)
I only read the first 4, but how is the whole Snape/Lilly thing addressed

Hmmmm.
My counter example of sex (securities fraud) and the City having really well written male characters has fallen after a single google search.

i admit i don't know in general. i was reaching for a woman author and i remembered that harry's thoughts during the romance subplots are not really recognizable as those of a high school boy. the stoicisim or unearned fame or w/e could all be good.the_zoomies wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 4:04 pmHmmm, I'd say Rowling is actually quite good at writing men, but I'm sure there are 100 examples to prove otherwise.

I think Snape is a pretty well-written character. He's not a good person, but he has some good qualities, and he's relatable, in a way. His conflict with James is seen in a Book 7 flashback, and it makes it clear that James is also not a good person. (I've heard this is mostly lost in the movies.)
Unfortunately, Rowling disagrees with this, and believes that Snape is a good guy, because of the power of love. This is confusing to me, and makes me think that Snape is a well-written character on accident, or that Rowling based him off a real person which is why he's compelling and believable. Because I'm not sure Rowling fully understands the character she's written.
This is kind of paralleled in Rowling's treatment of Slytherin House, who were clearly supposed to represent ambition, with all the flaws and virtues that implies. Until Book 7 came around and Rowling was like "uh, no, they're actually just the bad guys. it's the Evil House guys."

Re: webcomics
I don't think this was ever done well? like from the start they are Jerk House and also Wizard Racist House so it's not super surprising that they level up to Evil House as the stakes get higherAshenai wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 5:07 pm This is kind of paralleled in Rowling's treatment of Slytherin House, who were clearly supposed to represent ambition, with all the flaws and virtues that implies. rowling wanted them to be something else in the same way that wizards notionally wants black not to be the "evil colour" and with about as much success

obviously there's no narrative rule that requires assholes to then join team evil when the stakes get higher but I don't think she ever succeeded as portraying slytherin as embodying anything worthwhile. they're pretty much always the guys who suck

As one of the five people who read Rowling’s essay rather than shit their pants on social media, I’m doubly annoyed.
