Why on earth would you ever need that? It's kind of puzzling that apparently enough people asked to warrant a sign.

I remember there being a thread explaining this when this picture surfaced a few years ago, iirc people will sometimes use it to plug a portable generator into their home wiring, but this is super dangerous for reasons (maybe something to do with how circuit breakers work? idk)

Oh, right. I think I saw that on electroboom once. I don't think it's the breakers since they trip on current. Probably something bad happens if you have that rigged up and then your power comes back on, but I guess you can always turn off the main breaker.

the ac in your home and from the generator will not be in phase
so when the voltage in your home is peaking at +170V or whatever, your generator might be at zero or negative 50V or whatever. this is a short circuit

120V is kind of an average (root main square). it's actually going up and down from -170 to +170 all the time. you need a device to synchronize the voltages, and also make it more smooth (the waveform from your generator will be shitty) if you wanna connect to the utility. which you will want to do if you wanna sell your excess solar power!

if you wanna connect a generator to your home you can do it with interlocking breakers (only one can be closed at a time) but then who ever installed that for you would install a special exterior receptacle for your generator as well. at that point you may as well get second panelboard and only put your critical loads on it

also during a power outage caused by a hurricane this will electrify the downed power cables around your house, endangering pedestrians and workers

oh yeah. the transformer feeding your house works both ways so it'll actually bump up the voltage to however many thousand volts

Ha, I did not know this. You're probably effectively current limited by the generator though, right?
We lost power briefly twice in the last 24 hours so this topic is apropos. We seem to be really vulnerable to wind storms, it's annoying.

yeah but you don't need a lot of current to kill someone. im guessing it could still be fatal for line workers
i imagine they ground downed lines before working on them to provide an alternate current path in case some dipshit does this
