chess

the world championship is happening now and i have been paying attention

^ if maybe you feel like paying attention

it strikes me that so much of this match is like doing preparation with computers and then trying to end up in a line that you have already prepared for. it feels like both players are trying really hard to be the first to make a non-standard move that's still good because then the opponent has to think about the thing you did that's unusual whereas you have already scouted it.

i'm pretty convinced that if you could play chess perfectly it would be a draw.

At the post-match press conference, Carlsen was asked about other grandmasters’ criticism of his draw offer in the final game of regulation. “They’re entitled to their stupid opinions,” he said.

wasnt the thing there that he's a stronger player in the shorter format
so the draw offer is because he wants the certainty of playing in a format he knows he can win in

from the point of view of promoting chess as a spectator sport, i think it's easy to fault him
but you can't fault him from the "playing to win" point of view, which is what he should care about

imo seems like they should just play more rapid games instead of classical games if you want to make it more exciting for spectators

it's similar, but playing the rapid games first mean that the deciding game is always a classical one, so someone will have to try to attack with the long time controls

i think the current format makes way more sense. if someone just wins the classical portion, then the rapid games don't end up meaning anything (yeah i know it maybe affects match strategy or whatever). plus it's possible that the rapid games portion ends up tied anyway (the existing format solves this with an armageddon game (iirc: black gets less time, but wins the match if the game is drawn))

somehow i'm sort of enjoying playing chess
https://www.chess.com/live#g=3266148742 i missed a lot of tactics but he blundered harder than me; wheeeee
i think the biggest thing is that website can analyze your games so you can see where you fucked up; that makes me feel like at least i'm learning something as opposed to just fucking up favorable positions and not being sure where i went wrong

edit: so basically it seems like the easiest way to improve would be to get much better at tactics. then you can just take people to complicated positions and find a big advantage

Now I'm imagining a combination of chess and Final Fantasy Tactics

The game's about to start and I have to place 5 pieces and I'm like "and that's the tea...." and then place 5 queens
