Yeah I don't do that either, I meant it more as a general response to Crunchums' thing! Losing a game because I suck doesn't make me want to stop playing, it makes me want to suck less.

(Like you can avoid the endgame problem by wrecking people in the midgame with sick combos)

just played a 0 blunder 98% accuracy game (absolutely tepid exchage caro-kann where we exchanged off all the minor pieces and ended in an agreed draw on move 21)

Spoiler!
seems super hard to stop the f pawn if you just push it, the king is cut off and the rook is boxed in. I didn't calculate everything, though. I would push and hope for the best.
edit: hoping for the best proven to be top chess strategy once more

https://lichess.org/training/9o2ef
got this correct and i'm pleased because it's rated 2572
no points for me though because i did it unrated on the website
Spoiler!
i guessed Rxg8+ without seeing the next move, but then was able to see Qxb7
Qxb7 fails to Rd8
move the queen and Qb8 is mate (there are no safe squares for the queen that see that square)
threat of queen check -> queen blocks -> Rd8 winning the queen
engine says black's best line is Qe8 but Qb6 with the threat of Rd8, and black has no way to avoid losing the queen for the rook

failed this one!
Spoiler!
The pin on g7 looked very juicy, Rxg8+ would be forced mate without that pesky black queen. So I looked for ways to deflect the queen, and R1d7 looked very promising. I didn't notice that black had a perpetual check with Qd1-Qg3, so I guessed that.

i got this correct (up to 2536!)
Spoiler!
Rxf6 seemed so obviously the correct move (if Qxf6 then Nxd7+) that I made it without calculating very hard
after Be6 it's also pretty obvious that it's either Nxe6 or Bxe6
I saw that Nxe6 doesn't work
looking at Bxe6 the only move that I saw for black that defends Rxf7# without losing material was Re7. i couldn't see what white should do after that, but eventually my patience wore out (white has bishop/knight for a rook and still tons of pressure so shrug?) and i did it anyway and it was correct
the engine says white should respond Qc3 and black's best line ends up with a rook vs a queen? maybe i should be a little less patient, heh
it also says that Re7 isn't even the best move, that Qxf6 giving up the queen for the rook and the bishop is better (which i guess makes sense that rook rook vs queen knight is better than rook vs queen)

i don't really feel like i actually solved it, but i think i should change my perspective on that. yeah i didn't see everything, but i did correctly see the best moves

up to 2550 after solving this https://lichess.org/training/o0ZiX
Spoiler!
at first i was very confused. Bxe5 feels like the obvious move, but that doesn't force anything?
obv i would love to dislodge the knight from f3 and Qxh2#, but i didn't see a move that does that
but then i just went through all the possible knight moves, and oh Ng5 does that because Bxe5 undefended g5
and from there it was just calculating that white has no more checks after Nxd6+ Kf8 Bxg7 Kg8
had a bit of a surprise because i didn't see Re1, but it didn't take very long to realize that I can go Qxh2+ into Qxf2#

it still "works" as a puzzle from black's previous move, right? i.e. after g5 (assuming that was black's previous move) it's not like white had a different move to save the knight

the only problem i find with this game is that the "queen to c7 check, sac the queen on c8 for backrank checkmate" pattern (and its variations) comes up too much

the puzzle ratings get harder as it goes on; probably they will come up less as the rating gets higher

i don't like the incentive to just go for something that looks right without calculating and then restart if you get it wrong
