a reasonable thought, although i'm not sure it's rational
It's rational, it's just not mathematical

It's existential
well it's the rational extension of your value that money in hand is somehow more valuable

The former is asking yourself to be psychic. The latter is only asking yourself not to be foolish
People should not have regret over things they could not foresee, because there are always a lot of those and it's unavoidable. None of us are Bitcoin billionaires. In hindsight, it would have been very easy to become a Bitcoin billionaire. But there was no way of foreseeing Bitcoin's trajectory, so regret is pointless and teaches the wrong lessons.

But if you failed to make money in a way that was foreseeable (you buried your cash in your back yard instead of putting it in a safe investment), then you should feel regret and that regret should inspire you to not do that again.

See the answer to this question depends entirely on how desperately I need the $10 that I might lose

the correct answer is that the random distribution of wealth is immoral

lol

But no! I've been to Vegas, and I've gambled at way worse odds than what you just proposed (obviously)! But it was with money where I didn't care if I lost it. The gambling itself had entertainment value

i knew you were going to say this

the more detailed correct answer is that the random distribution of wealth is immoral, even for entertainment purposes

speaking of regret, my wife packed me a mini kitkat with my lunch. i was looking forward to eating it, but i couldn't find it.

i tried focusing. did i eat it, and have literally NO memory of doing so? that seems insane, i'ts been like 10 minutes since i opened my lunch. and i dont even have a chocolate taste in my mouth

i checked my waste basket to make sure. the wrapper is there. what the fuck!

The pilgrim asked the Buddha: "O Buddha, how can you smile always? What is the secret of your eternal happiness?"

The Buddha opened his eyes and spoke. "The secret is this: I always clearly recall the taste of the mini kitkat I had for lunch."

The pilgrim hesitated, then replied. "But Buddha, you did not have a mini kitkat for lunch."

The Buddha merely smiled, and nodded. And at that moment, the pilgrim was enlightened.
