Re: Board Games
Not me, I am a nerd with infinite attention span for games. But like, from experience, most everyone else does not.

Re: Board Games
you can't talk to people when they are spending 15 minutes to decide on their order placement in AGoT
Re: Board Games
The last real board game I played was Battlestar Galactica. It wasn't even my idea, the host was like "fuck yeah, bring Battlestar let's go". I set it up and stuff, did a quick rules explanation for the 2 guys who needed it. I don't think it even took a single turn cycle before everyone was on side conversations, sharing videos on their phones, asking "whose turn is it", etc. It was a nightmare for a gamer like me, I didn't want to ruin the vibe but aggggggh
Re: Board Games
I cannot comprehend inhabiting a mind where meme videos on youtube are more compelling than a full 5 player game of Battlestar in the middle of a worldwide live board game drought.
Re: Board Games
what are you doing playing 1v1 AGoT?Rylinks wrote:you can't talk to people when they are spending 15 minutes to decide on their order placement in AGoT

Re: Board Games
your argument for going on your phone is that other people are going on their phone too
i don't actually care, but that is the argument being formed

Re: Board Games
my argument is that unlike a dinner conversation, the point of playing board games is the board game and not conversation
Re: Board Games
We've never had this problem with Battlestar, or Cthulhu Wars, Gods War, Terraforming Mars, etc.
But the last time we played Titan, yeah, one guy whenever it wasn't his turn or he wasn't being attacked, he was running around the store trading Magic cards, not paying attention, etc.

Re: Board Games
well there's levels, right? if everyone is just doing whatever then yeah. but if everyone is just doing whatever and one person is on the next highest level of actually kinda knowing what they're doing, i think that one person is usually going to win
eh, i mean i wouldn't even say that i recommend the game, more that i've been nerd sniped / am enjoying the process of getting better at it. i can totally understand not finding it fun. a large percentage of the game is playing solitaire optimally, and then later on in the game there's interaction from combat, but it's not even that interesting. there are 9 different ways of getting stars, but 2-3 of them you basically never go for (popularity + upgrade, structures rarely) so it's pretty much always 6 of {mech, recruit, worker, objective, combat, combat, power} (except of course for Saxony) and the power star is like you go for it if it makes sense with your mat and otherwise you don't. there's still skill and variety, but it's a lot of effort to invest to get to the point where you're really playing the game, and then the game is just ok
u gotta skate
Re: Board Games
i think the important thing is that everyone is on the same page. if people just really want to socialize then don't play complicated games, play simple ones. i love more complicated games but i'm only interested in playing them if the people i'm playing with are actually interested in playing a complicated game

Re: Board Games
Also there are games where everyone has no choice but to pay attention at all times

Re: Board Games
The wrinkle is that sometimes some chucklefuck will tell you "fuck yeah, bring Battlestar" and you think you are on the same page, but you are not on the same page.Crunchums wrote: ↑Tue Nov 23, 2021 6:44 pm i think the important thing is that everyone is on the same page. if people just really want to socialize then don't play complicated games, play simple ones. i love more complicated games but i'm only interested in playing them if the people i'm playing with are actually interested in playing a complicated game

Re: Board Games
you must play with people who don't regularly panzer for five minutes
Re: Board Games
I once played Seven Wonders with a gal who just took whatever card. Mostly focused on the side conversation. It took most of the way through the game for me to realize she was ignoring costs.
OH, we also explicitly got invited to a "board game night" one time with another couple. But the truthful pitch would have been: "Come over and my husband will set up Power Grid, but this is all just window dressing for the main event, which is conversation. Occasionally I will ask, 'oh is it my turn?'" She's a state representative now.
Re: Board Games
It used to be drinking games right? Like we used to play drinking games in these social situations. They were much better suited for it.
But now we're all old and respectable people don't play quarters and shit, they play board games right? Put one of those things on the table. I don't care which one.
