Bios: Genesis comes in a small box like the size of Mille Bornes or something, but has a 52-page rulebook with tiny little type

I got to play the above yesterday. I evolved a lamp shell. Then the Earth froze into a giant snowball and killed all players. I'm afraid none of you were born

Re: Board Games
I also got to play Bios: Megafauna this weekend, and man is it cool. It's my favorite of the Bios games as of right now. It has the same element of Genesis where while you're competing with the other players, the planet is often trying to kill you -- this time with temperature changes, continental drift, oxygen levels going up and down, and so on.
It uses a system where the mechanics of the game take care of "derivative effects" for you -- let me try to explain. Suppose for example that an event causes mass forestation along a latitude line (not an uncommon event in this game). We put forests in all the plains spaces along that latitude, which will make hiding/ambush the predominant paradigm for prey tactics in those spaces rather than speed. You would think that adding forests to 20 percent of the planet would do something to oxygen levels, wouldn't you? The wonderful thing is, you don't need a special rule to make this happen. The green discs that you use to mark forests come from the oxygen track. This vicariously changes the oxygen level for you, so there's no extra rule you need to remember. This also works for the temperature track and ice; the temperature track and mountains; the cloud cover track and ice; the oxygen track and offshore algae blooms; I think that's all but I might not be remembering all the events in the game. This is all incredible and it's like the game does it for you.
This works in reverse, too, so if something slays all the forests, the forest discs go onto the oxygen track, hammering oxygen levels

SPI once released a game that would take 1,500 hours to complete. Even the designer never finished a single game of it

Re: Board Games
this is the game that infamously had a rule increasing the water consumption of italian troops, because they needed to boil pasta
e: I see this was actually brought up in the first paragraph of the article. I bet the game has some serious balance issues 200 hours in or so

Re: Board Games
I've heard the story of this game before, but it just now strikes me that 1500 hours isn't actually that outrageous in this day and age, people pour obscene amounts of time doing dumb shit all the time and Steam has the record to prove it. Has there ever been a stream of anybody attempting this game? If Desert Bus can get a whole charity event surrounding it, surely there's enough eyeballs.
Re: Board Games
a stream of ten bored men doing long division and updating org charts for 6 hours before moving any pieces. this is what I want to see

The digital version of Talisman is now on the Xbox, and playing it on the Xbox is extremely satisfying
It was on sale the other day for $9, but I think it's only $12 anyway

Re: Board Games
i played scythe online with grobots and the turn cycle took long enough that i could successfully do my nails in between turns, making it one of the most powerful boardgames ive played online

Re: Board Games
yeah i felt this way also
seems like you really need more than one go to fully 'get' it
Re: Board Games
that was a thing that i appreciated about my first playthrough - i was pretty locked in analysis paralysis, but i had everyone else's turns to think about it
which normally would indicate that the game isn't interactive enough but in the future once i know what i'm doing then paying attention to what other people are doing will be part of the interaction
i would definitely be willing to spend money on it if grobots were going to play it again

Re: Board Games
Did I mention that we played Terraforming Mars for the first time the other weekend? Holy cow what a great game
I'm really looking forward to playing it again. This is a game that bears a ton of analysis, of the cards at the very least, and also the corps (game is slightly asymmetric due to each player being a corporation with a unique ability)

its the best. one of the few instances where great subject matter is paired with fun, tight, and varied gameplay.Doug wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 3:45 pm Did I mention that we played Terraforming Mars for the first time the other weekend? Holy cow what a great game

the venus expansion and extra boards are also great, reasonably priced, and add a lot to the gameplay without changing too much.

Re: Board Games
We didn't use any of the expansions, it was everyone's first game
We didn't even use the real corporations. We used the beginner ones
I heard Prelude was the best expansion

huh, i somehow missed that one. im not really sure how. im going to go conduct some e-commerce!

Re: Board Games
It's really simple
There is a separate deck of Prelude cards, these are like project cards, but they have no cost
Everyone is dealt four. When the game starts, your first turn is (must be) to play two of your Prelude cards and throw away the other two
The idea is this makes the game even more asymmetric
