Are there cool decks I can build with just the core set? Im still in the 'play 1v1 with a fellow casual' phase, so they just need to be balanced vs each other

and that's the tea this seems hard, especially since there are zero good fracters
the fact that these decks are just going to be playing each other is sort of weird
like you could play Morning Star and the only barriers that it can't touch on its own are Hadrian's Wall and Heimdall 1.0... so like is the corp playing those?
my first instinct is to play gabe (sucker, mimic, faerie, EMS) but there are so many problems. you need memory but all of the options for that are blah (rip desperado). rig is important but you don't have memory for both sneakdoor and a fracter stronger than aurora, oh and sucker too. and that's the tea
chaos theory might be the best. it's awkward because what you would want to do is mopus + 3 breakers but the fracter situation kind of ruins that unless you just play aurora. probably better to embrace dinosaurus problems and probably play 3 of it (the problem with dinosaurus is that it needs to be installed before the breaker you want to host it on). indexing is one of the strong cards in the box. so yeah probably CT
i love reina and you could probably do something with her here like dyson memchip + underworld contact. liberated is strong
thinking about this makes me feel like the original core is better just because it had more fun cards (desperado, parasite), although probably core 2 is more balanced (probably runner is favored in pure core 1). oh man i also realized that if you only have 1 box then you can't 3of a lot of things that you would want to; oh well (actually more of a problem in core 1 probably). so this deckbuilding thing really feels like a cripple-fight, heh

HB has some solid stuff, but your ID being garbage is really sad
Weyland you can either build punitive with 5/3s but only having 2 punitive is very sad for that so i'd probably not do that.
Jinteki I wouldn't touch; trying to play shell game without Cerebral Overwriter or Mushin sounds awful. you could build a regular deck, but the good cards that you get out of that is like Celebrity Gift, the end
NBN could be decent. probably just a normalish deck with some light tag punishment (some CA, some psycho) to punish tagme. probably every runner you build is going to not like tags, so raven is really good.

it's because they didn't want it to be legal to do things just to trigger other things like
not being able to use forger just to trigger tech trader; you can only use it if there's actually a tag to avoid or remove
but instead of having a sensible system magic (which uses "target" to accomplish this), they have this ridiculous kludge: an ability can only be triggered if it would change the game state.
(this is actually not the same rule as what's going on in the Loki situation above)
predictably it leads to a lot of wonky stuff

if you dirty laundry a remote server that's just CVS with no ice, the corp can use CVS to fizzle dirty laundry (because CVS trashes itself, meaning the server disappears, meaning the run is not successful, meaning DL doesn't pay out). but the corp can only do this if there are a virus tokens to purge - otherwise they're not allowed to triggers CVS

technically if the runner has a Clot but no virus tokens, the corp can't purge, because clot's ability doesn't count in the "would it change the game state" calculus. they had to add a rule specifically saying that abilities like clot's count in the calculus

eh i don't really buy that; you can view damage prevention as the creation of a damage prevention shield
but probably there are cases where magic doesn't prevent stuff; my point is that targeting is a way of preventing stuff

i don't think preventing stuff is the primary purpose of the targeting system, and i don't think that magic really tries to do this in non-targeting cases. Like, they could write "if you would be dealt damage, you may instead sacrifice ~" but they usually don't
