Bring on the kung-fu amputees - no arms vs. no legs anyone? A bit of high-speed underground ninja-tunneling is always good as well. I wanna see some shit like that. Crazy monks with gnarly special powers can make any film good. FACT.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
yes. mostly what I mean is that the worldbuilding was bewildering. most of the sentient beings that we see are human, all of which are really dumb, and all but two of whom are NPCs. we see sentient (bipedal, wearing clothes, speaking english, etc; basically human) animals: a wolf named Wolf, a snake named Snake, a shark named Shark, a tarantula named Tarantula, a piranha named Piranha, (<-- these 5 = "The Bad Guys") a fox named Diane Foxington, and a guinea pig named Professor Marmalade. and we see a non-sentient cat and some non-sentient guinea pigs; also it's implied that George Clooney exists. Shark and Piranha have legs and walk around breathing. all the humans are terrified on-sight by The Bad Guys and they have the whole Zootopia-ish [people judge us by our species] thing, but when Wolf puts on a mustache and hides his tail or when Shark puts on a dress or when Piranha puts on a waiter's uniform they immediately become unremarkable, even to the non-NPCs. so like it's dumb to the point that they're obviously leaning into it, but it's also completely incoherent. how do animals work in this world? would it have killed you to throw in some more background NPC-human animals like sheep and horses or whatever? and it feels so empty, like The Bad Guys do heists and that's the only thing that that exists in this world's Los Angeles.
ultimately i was still entertained because it's fun and the animation was decent (felt like a combination of wreck-it ralph and turning red) and i like animated things, but i can't remember the last movie i saw where it felt like it was trying really hard to break my sense of immersion. it was the kind of movie that makes me go "damn i really shouldn't take pixar for granted", though i think below the level of good non-pixar movies

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
yms didn't like that either, but i feel like i kind of got it, like the animal thing is just that they're like, uh, <thing>? like not actually animal people just <something> and that's just a cool way to show it. a group of people discriminated pretty hard against that each have a similar characteristic, physical appearance, which has everyone assuming they will act and behave a certain way no matter what
maybe that works a bit better for me because of the anime trope thing where if a person has spikey hair they're just assumed to be a delinquent, and the consequences of that actually go pretty hard

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
theyre not actually animal people, at least imo. they're people who have <common discriminated against physical / <something> characteristic>. like i don't think it has to be physical, necessarily. like it isnt like theyre a group of ugly people who got together, but it could be. it could just be people who everyone has always assumed is a shitty person, and then you just draw them as animal people and oh look how easy it was for them to find each other and become a group, because they're all animal people (they share some fundamental commonality)Crunchums wrote:i do not understand the meaning of your post
it'd be like how we all hooked up because except for grak we're similarly depressed or weird or whatever, but instead of having to figure that out we could have just gone oh hey im an animal person. oh yeah me too. we clearly have something in common. because in this universe being <whatever> means you look like an animal person for some reason.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
the movie literally starts with every person around them assuming that theyre going to get murdered / that the main characters are robbing the place despite doing literally nothing, and then the message of the movie is whether or not main character should lean into how everyone thinks he's a shitty person who's going to do shitty things no matter what or if he should, like, actually try despite thatCrunchums wrote:that does not feel very coherent to me
Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
it's neat. it's like a movie for teenage delinquents.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
1) the main characters are in fact dangerous criminals. they literally rob a bank immediately after leaving that cafe
2) they're also high profile dangerous criminals; if those people at the cafe recognize them as Wolf and Snake then their fear is totally justified
3) if instead they see them as just wolf and snake then it's unclear how justified their fear is, because the world of the movie is so lazily constructed that it's not clear what the people at the cafe are seeing. are there other humanoid wolves and snakes in this world? are there non-humanoid wolves and snakes in this world? we have no idea
