The Motion Picture Arts Thread
Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I watched and actively disliked Knives Out this weekend.
It aped the form of a drawing room mystery without managing to be interesting or entertaining. There were any number of really good actors in it who were handed thin and unmemorable characters. Moreover Johnson was clearly mostly interested in making commentary than in making a good mystery. It was so incredibly heavy handed that it might has well have been directed between takes of the Last Jedi casino scene.

You know, it had all this hype, and I kept thinking that it looks decent but not that it looked amazing (still haven't seen it)

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I went in expecting a Clue like comedy as it had been compared to such by people I know. It was not what I was expecting, and what it was was underwhelming and very interested in politics. That's not what I want out of a murder mystery.
Spoiler!

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
If you want to see a really good drawing room mystery that explores the class divide with a defter hand, go watch Gosford Park. It's fantastic.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I love Evil Under the Sun. It's a drawing-room mystery except the room is an island acting as an inescapable room by proxy

Yeah, I watched that so many times as a kid. It's not a particularly great movie, but it was a lot of fun. I have a real fondness for all the Ustinov Hercule Poirot movies.

potato chips are awesome
Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
Think about it like this. Kettle cooked salt and vinegar chips are indeed awesome. These movies were like Pringles. Not great, but you still enjoy them.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
Man, I wish Pringles were better. I tried them once, because I really liked the whole tube thing. They were awful! Why don't better chips come in tubes???

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I like Pringles, but they're sort of a trick chip because of the tube. You're getting the equivalent of a small bag that you'd buy at a corner store, and paying almost two maybe even two plus dollars for the thing, but it seems so fucking reasonable because it's there in the chip aisle in a big tube that seems somewhat comparable to a large bag of chips

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I watched The Gentlemen last night, and I really enjoyed it. I am a sucker for British gangster flicks, and this one is solid. It's not quite up to the level of Lock, Stock or Snatch, but it's around the level of Rocknrolla. This is more of a middle aged Guy Ritchie mobster film. It's not quite as frenetic as his earlier stuff, but it's probably a bit more ferocious. Plus Hugh Grant was clearly having the time of his life playing a sleazy reporter.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
We watched Onward btw and it was really cute and good and kind of sad too

I've heard good things. I guess they sent it to streaming?

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
They let you buy it on Amazon yeah. They also sent a bunch of stuff for rental if you didn't see that. Nothing we care about though. Mostly bad movies since that's mostly what comes out in March.
I can't tell if I liked Onward because I'm a dad or because it was actually good but it was definitely better than 90% of the other kids movies out there. Like... uh.. we watch Spies in Disguise last week and it was not very good.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
Have you watched Sexy Beast? I think that's one of the most underrated British crime films, in as much as many people haven't heard of it and just having Kingsley/McShane/Winstone on the screen together is a treat.Dantes wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2020 1:19 pm I watched The Gentlemen last night, and I really enjoyed it. Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I've been on a kick buying and watching movies specifically from the 30s and 40s
Lost Horizon -- This Frank Capra film about Shangri-La no longer exists in its entirety. But a complete soundtrack was found, and the movie has been reassembled such that it is only missing 7 minutes -- which has been filled in with still pictures. This is a classic film, but as with some classics, it's more important than great
The Maltese Falcon -- This is a great film with some incredible dialogue and some great scenes, especially the climax. The crimes don't necessarily make the most sense by today's standards, but I think most people would enjoy this anyway
The Picture of Dorian Gray -- I had never seen this version from the 40s before, and holy cow is it fantastic. Absolutely a tremendous classic. Obviously you have to ask, but how is the painting? The painting is bonkers. Trust me

that's a great way of putting it. i enjoyed the third man and casablanca (and the maltese falcon is pretty good), but, man, Vertigo just ... i guess i don't really like moviesDoug wrote:This is a classic film, but as with some classics, it's more important than great
