Okay so in the middle of the movie when it looked like everything was pat, I said to my wife, "wait, but then who hired Blanc?" And then like a minute later Blanc points out the same thing and I felt smart.

On the other hand, during Marta's flashback I was like, "WAIT, black doesn't play first in Go, I bet this is all a lie." Turns out black does play first in Go and I'm dumb.

knives out is a kind of frustrating movie because it's like holy shit a mid budget mystery movie starring good actors could be good? people would watch that? make more adventure movies, you fuckers

edit - or make adventure movies at all. tintin 2, peter jackson. let's fucking go

I liked seeing Chris Evans as a cocky dick again. He used to play that a lot (Scott Pilgrim, The Losers, Fantastic Four) and then he spent so long being the nicest character in the Marvel Universe that everyone forgot how good he was at it.

I watched The Hill with Sean Connery, which is a Sidney Lumet film from 1965 about British soldiers in a brutal military prison for misbehaving soldiers. It's super good

I also watched Bride of Frankenstein and it's overrated

I just rewatched Chinatown, and then watched The Two Jakes

You may never have heard of The Two Jakes. It's a sequel to Chinatown. The production of The Two Jakes was full of problems, and the producer ultimately had to be fired. Jack Nicolson took over and directed the movie himself. It got mixed reviews, and wasn't a financial success, although Roger Ebert loved it and thought it was great.

Is it any good?

1. If we compare it to Chinatown, then, no. It pretty blatantly tries to have all the elements of Chinatown. A mysterious woman with an unknown past, a conspiracy about land, a suspicious wealthy old man who rules over some local industry, and so on. Having the trappings of Chinatown only invites unfavorable comparisons, and so it has this feel the whole movie of just, trying to recapture something from Chinatown.
2. If we don't compare it to Chinatown, well then, it's a pretty good film noir. Jack Nicolson and Harvey Keitel! You have to love both of them. And the cars and the clothes, and the way everything looks is great (it takes place in 1948). And the story is twisty enough to be interesting. There are some great acting moments, because as I said, Harvey Keitel is in it, and he's just something else always. So it's pretty good.
3. But then, can you see it if you haven't seen Chinatown? Not really. I don't think it's going to make sense, completely. When they talk about what happened in Chinatown, you're going to be lost.

So is he a really nice guy who plays a great jerk, or is he a cockey dick who is good at faking sincerity?

I think he's a good actor who with an energy that tends to get cast as cocky dickishness because of the shape of his face when he smirks.

You know, if you think about it, when Heimdall sends the Hulk to Earth at the beginning of Infinity War -- he really should have sent himself instead
