The Motion Picture Arts Thread
Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
i don't think it's overthinking if while watching the movie i'm constantly puzzled about how the world of the movie works / having my immersion broken by lazy writing
overthinking is more like over-analyzing it after watching it

i have not

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread

ABC Murders is so well crafted.
I'm really fond of Peril at End House for whatever reason.

Arti, I think you'll like this video, this guy explains (some of the reasons) why Into the Spider-Verse is so good

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
it's always weird when you know more than the video, like at the end when the person says that it was great that sony and marvel invested in this brilliant step forward for the art form, and oh my gosh the courage that must have taken. except into the spider-verse only exists because sony completely tanked their animation department, the emoji movie; the cancelled movies by the likes of faust and genndy, which would have been fantastic; phil and chris themself refused the actual fucking keys to sony's entire animation studio earlier because it was such a miserable and awful place to work at; and fuck the fucking seth rogen food movie disaster
so after all of that the animation department was able to just do whatever without upper management fucking with them because there was no expectation that anything they do be good, or probably profitable. when they movie did succeed they immediately green lit a spider-man noir movie missing the entire point of everything
also phil lord and chris miller were involved creatively but this is like saying tim burton was responsible for the nightmare before christmas which continues to be unfortunate
having said all of that though it seems weirdly uh like i'm approaching it from an uncharitable angle, let's say. let's imagine the reality is somewhere in between

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
also having mentioned genndy he very interestingly tried to bring traditional 2d animation styles, squashes and stretches and in betweens that don't exist in cg movies, to cg movies with his failed popeye pilot, which likely wouldnt have been that successful a movie anyway. he then got sidelined into doing those hotel transylvania movies with adam sandler's crew. maybe that had interesting stuff in it animation wise. i can't imagine anyone noticed though
but then the spider-verse being what it is and how successful it was is just really great because now you can get that stuff in more things. good. great
and yeah forehead lines are important. a lot of invisible things are important. like the guy is telling you that the lines exist and then after there stops being an arrow pointing to them you dont even notice them anymore, but compare those expressions to inside out like the video did. night and day.
edit - it's a good thing you odn't notice it, though, or you'd start to notice how like every single video game you play has no lines on anyone's face and how terrible that looks

is this like the reverse silent hill where instead of removing important fog, they just fogged up everything out of spite?

Maybe not third wave feminism, but you can find articles claiming masterwork status.
Pour like Hemingway's last call.

People loved that movie! But 1992's kinky Basic Instinct was a step too far: The erotic thriller scandalized and infuriated audiences to the tune of a $400-million worldwide gross.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I don't know. I mean, how do you watch movies like Robocop or Starship Troopers, which were both ridiculously heavy handed satires, without at least giving consideration to the idea that Showgirls was as well?
That being said, I wouldn't call it a masterpiece under any interpretation.
Pour like Hemingway's last call.

True
Unfortunately I don't believe I'd be willing to watch Showgirls again to test the theory
