The Motion Picture Arts Thread

Probably what *this* should be called.

I don't quite understand that. Do you enjoy serialized television with ongoing story arcs that stretch a season or more?

This is a great question, and you know it really depends

There's the X-Files and Walking Dead paradigm, where each season is written independently, and the writers for season three have no idea what season five is going to be like

Or then there's the (initial) Game of Thrones paradigm, where certainly as of season three they have to know what season five is going to be like, because it's already a novel

Sometimes it goes awry, like Dark was supposed to be four seasons and suddenly they had to end it in three

i do generally like the first seasons best, so there's something to that, enjoying being introduced to new characters or a new take on a character, and the environment

but you know, i do also like some long running shows with long running story arcs

i guess i feel kind of bait and switched when i like these characters and this arc, but actually it's all a part of this other stupid arc. and it seems like the other arc just kinda has to be stupid if you're allowed to consume it piecemeal
wow, [you]. that all sounds terrible. i hope it gets better for you

I think The Batman did the best job of any batman movie I've seen with depicting how it would really feel if there was a person in a bat costume showing up to insert themselves into crime scenes. not really really, but he does come off as a believably dangerous weirdo

whenever people write "the batman" instead of just "batman" (and yes I get that that's the title of the film) i think of the way Cillian Murphy says "the batman" in that one scene in batman begins https://youtu.be/xgj6-F1m2CI?t=239

I think of that Batman serial they did in the 1940s, where the villain was Japanese and they portrayed him and his henchmen in this like super-racist fashion. The villain, "Prince Daka," kept saying "The Beeahtmeeeahn" in this ridiculous accent, not even close to an actual Japanese accent, designed to make him this "evil foreign Jap" character for the 1943 audience to hate

We saw some of this serial because we were members of The Tampa Theatre, which at the time showed only indie films and foreign films, and they would precede the movie with an episode from this serial (at which the audience would laugh at how bad it was) in the style of the way serials would precede your movie back then

Everything Everywhere All At Once had a very big night last night at the Oscars.

Which, good. Particularly Michelle Yeoh. She's always been an excellent actress, it's good to see her get the recognition.

specifically
Spoiler!
*they should have cut down the fight scenes a bit; wouldn't want to get rid of them entirely, but they went on for too long and it felt like it was getting away from the heart of the movie
*the resolution of "actually i appreciate my husband's goofiness" should have been set up more. when they're talking about a divorce it's like yeah maybe they should because we never see them happy together at all. "the universe gave my daughter someone who is also like that for her" did it, because we really don't know Becky very much at all
*basically spend less time on "wow look at all this wacky universe stuff and combat scenes" and more on the characters and their relationships to each other
u gotta skate
