Ah so kind of a borg of similar artLuna wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 11:35 pmCrunchums wrote:i do not know what you are talking about
i thought Turning Red was really goodok so this is complicated because it's sort of an amalgamation of a lot of hate being rolled into rallying against a single art style, which makes sense, it is the visual representation of a lot of similar things, but here's just the art style / someone defending the art style:Doug wrote: What's calarts, precious
which this doesnt really work anyway because the guy who made the one in the bottom right is british and unlikely to have gone to calarts, although that title character might look like that for a reason, and the bottom left is from someone who actually came from new york's art school which is totally different than an art school in california. the top two, though.
but nevertheless this is similar and whether or not we've had similar art throughout the history of cartoons is kind of irrelevant as to whether or not somebody would enjoy <current art trend>.
from there you can get into how people are just sick of <current year shit> and how that's being rolled into faux adult cartoons like the bottom left, similar art styles / similar people running the shows / similar themes (but kind of not really).
but probably what got this ball rolling just in the first place was probably people figuring out that uh:

that was reporting, but it's obv complicated, and it's something that i find interesting. and even if what you're saying were the case, the more you get into a thing, the more you want out of a thing. it's like no longer enjoying / appreciating the three (four?) chord structure in music or whatever.Crunchums wrote: so basically you're putting in a lot of work to find a way to dislike good things? do i have that right?
Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
and it's not like it's some major conspiracy or anything, either. the pixar guys are just from the same classroom (a113 which shows up in all of their movies). it kind of tracks that theyd then know each other / go work with each other / offer each other employment / be reallly skilled and good at animation and their jobs because they went to, got into, one of the best art schools in the entire countryKhaos wrote:also, a lot of those are directed by the same people, so
and then the list is sort of further rigged because katzenberg (the guy in charge of animation department during the disney renaissance) made dreamworks after falling out with disney and so his formed team would then also be disney guys
and of course you'd want to go to the disney art school if you wanted to work at / were inspired by disney. and having the school be so sought after and hard to get into, sort of, is obviously going to create some of the best talents. if that broke down to just requiring large checks or connections that you already had, though

the problem there though is growing up in the country vs growing up in the worst city in all of Canada (where red takes place)rianalnn wrote:I thought you said 'Japanese wilderness' & I was like, yes! for non canadians: toronto is the city punching bag of Canada and is often referred to as the ugliest worst place ever. this is wild because like, edmonton exists

It's too bad, too - I spent a lot of time across the lake when I was young, at my grandparent's place in Ossineke. That part of Michigan is hauntingly beautiful in my memories (& it's not just the dinosaur park on US23).

We got a babysitter and saw Everything Everywhere All at Once. Completely bonkers movie. I don't think they really stuck their themes but who cares, it's insane and you should probably see it.

If you're referring to EEAaO then there are butt plugs and dildos used for comedic effect, and one blurred out penis. It's good fun.
Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
Oh also some violence and profanity I guess. I sometimes forget other people live in countries that care about things other than sexual content.

Saw Dr Strange 2
It was a mess, but I loved the goofy Sam Raimi shit. I can't believe some of the stuff they let him do. But the superhero plot side of things was pretty lackluster.

Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
Oh, I assume people have heard by now, but Everything Everywhere All at Once was pretty amazing. It's one of the weirdest and most incredible experiences I've ever had watching a movie. Not all of it works perfectly and it gets kind of overwhelming by the end (in good and bad ways), but it was absolutely worth seeing. I laughed and cried, sometimes at the same time. It's a fucking ride.
Re: The Motion Picture Arts Thread
I saw Dr. Strange. It was way better than the naysayers are making it out to be. Not an S tier Marvel movie but a fun movie with cool stuff

Yeah, the horror stuff was cool, but it clashed badly with the typical MCU bullshit, imo. Resulted in a movie where I liked a lot of individual bits, but overall it felt like a total mess.

I ain't got time to read all that Arti, but it's worth pointing out that when you're railing against artistic homogeneity, pointing out that 1 of your 4 examples comes from a foreign artist is not the self own you seem to think it is....
