I had this game a long time ago called Balderdash where there would be cards with fake words and real words, and the players had to guess which words were real and which were fake

Re: thats a word, huh?
i learned about that word because it was in that tom cardy party dog song
but my girlfriend was a linguistics major and the other day we were talking about aspirated vs. non-aspirated things
it's a really weird feeling to try to make sounds that you're not used to making, like a non-aspirated T, which i figured out how to do with the help of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7szkN4QcxI
it ends up sounding like a d but i don't think it's the same as a d (because your tongue is doing something differently?)

Re: thats a word, huh?
The difference between t and d is not aspiration (whether you blow air out), it's voicing (whether you engage your vocal cords)Crunchums wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 5:20 pm i learned about that word because it was in that tom cardy party dog song

for example, a whispered "d" is essentially indistinguishable from a whispered "t", because whispering makes everything nonvoiced.
Re: thats a word, huh?
Does what you're talking about have anything to do with registers, as in the whistle register, the falsetto register, the modal (normal) register, and the bizarre "vocal fry" register

Re: thats a word, huh?
You can easily check if you're voicing by putting a finger on your throat. If you feel vibration, it's a voiced sound, if not, it's not.
Re: thats a word, huh?
I don't think so, registers are always (?) voiced. The difference between registers is not voicing, it's obstructing the sound in various ways by tensing your throat muscles, glottis etc.
Re: thats a word, huh?
Just don't put your finger through your throat. That would be bad.
Pour like Hemingway's last call.
