This question spoils the above question
Spoiler!
Do I actually have to ask this? People around me did not know the answer. A trick question I didn't even know was a trick question

What is the name of the Columbia Pictures torch-bearing woman? Not the real-life woman, but the icon depicted?
Spoiler!
Columbia. Before "Uncle Sam" was invented, Columbia was the personification of the United States

the origin of columbia university, and "hail columbia", which was the unofficial national anthem before the star-spangled banner

this is only vaguely related but I really like that there was also a "columbia district", on the other side of the country https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_District

That sent me down the track of looking up what the Columbia river in Washington State is named after.

Answer: A boat named Columbia Rediviva. It was the first American boat to circumnavigate the globe. The Space Shuttle Columbia was also named after that boat

What movie features both Robert Englund, who played Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series, and Kane Hodder, who played Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th series?
Spoiler!
Wes Craven's Wishmaster, where Englund plays a dock supervisor, and Hodder has a cameo as a guard; or Hatchet, where Hodder plays Victor (and Thomas) Crowley, and Englund plays a hunter. Tony Todd (Candyman) also appears in this film. Unexpectedly, Hodder does not play Jason in the seemingly obvious answer Freddy vs. Jason, and was replaced by Ken Kirzinger.

Doug wrote: Sun Feb 14, 2021 8:12 pm For each U.S. state, can you name the (immediate) language or people the name comes from? Bonus points if you know where they in turn got it from, i.e., the full etymology

Alabama
Spoiler!
Native American, from the Alabama people
Alaska
Spoiler!
The Russians, who called it "Alyaska," a word they in turn got from the Aleutian people from their word for "mainland"
Arizona
Spoiler!
From the Spanish, "Arizonac," which they in turn got from the O'odham people.
Arkansas
Spoiler!
From the French "Arcansas," which they in turn got from an Algonquian term for the Quapaw people
California
Spoiler!
From the Spanish "Las Californias," probably a reference to the mythical Queen Calafia and her islands
Colorado
Spoiler!
The Spanish word for "reddish"
Connecticut
Spoiler!
Native American. From the Mohicans, from their word for "beside a river"
Delaware
Spoiler!
The English, from Lord De La Warr, the first territorial governor over Jamestown
Florida
Spoiler!
The Spanish, as in "flowery"
Georgia
Spoiler!
English, after George II
Hawaii
Spoiler!
The Hawaiian people
Idaho
Spoiler!
Native American. From the Athabaskan word "Idaahe," which is what the Comanches called them, but this appears to merely mean "enemy." Anecdotally, a single politician posing as a Jefferson Territory delegate bluffed everyone into thinking that the area already had this name
Illinois
Spoiler!
From the French, who altered the Illiniwek people's name for themselves
Indiana
Spoiler!
English speakers a la "Land of the Indians"
Iowa
Spoiler!
From the French, who transformed the Ioway people's name for themselves
Kansas
Spoiler!
Native American. The Kansa people, a subgroup of the Sioux people
Kentucky
Spoiler!
Native American. Either Iroquois or Shawnee, from their word for "meadow"
Louisiana
Spoiler!
The French, for Louis the XIV
Maine
Spoiler!
The French, after the province Maine in France
Maryland
Spoiler!
The English, after the wife of King Charles
Massachusetts
Spoiler!
Native American. From the Algonquian word for a large hill
Michigan
Spoiler!
The French, their alteration of an Ojibwa word "meshi-gami for "big lake"
Minnesota
Spoiler!
Native American, from the Dakota word for cloudy water
Mississippi
Spoiler!
The French, their alteration of an Ojibwa word "meshi-ziibi" for "big river"
Missouri
Spoiler!
Native American. The Algonquian word for the "people of the big canoes" (referring to a Sioux subgroup)
Montana
Spoiler!
From the Spanish word for mountain
Nebraska
Spoiler!
Native American, the Sioux name for the Platte River
Nevada
Spoiler!
From the Spanish word for snowy -- the Sierra Nevada were named first, and then the state
New Hampshire
Spoiler!
The English, after Southampton
New Jersey
Spoiler!
The English, after the island of Jersey
New Mexico
Spoiler!
Translated from the Spanish "Nuevo Mexico," "Mexico" in turn being an Aztec word
New York
Spoiler!
The English, after the city of York
North, South Carolina
Spoiler!
The "Carolina" part is from the French, after Charles I, while the divisions north and south are of course English
North, South Dakota
Spoiler!
Native American, from the Dakota people; and then the divisions north and south are of course English
Ohio
Spoiler!
Native American. The Iroquoian name for the river
Oklahoma
Spoiler!
Native American, but a portmanteau by an English speaker. Allen Wright combined the Choctaw word for "red" "homma" and the Choctaw word for "people" "oka" to make up his own new word
Oregon
Spoiler!
If you said Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Native American, you may be correct. The origin is uncertain. The Spanish word "orejón" means "big ear," but then "oregano" is also a Spanish word, and there's a stream in Spain called the Arroyo del Oregón. Unfortunately, the French word "ouragan" means "windstorm," and is another plausible candidate. A writer in 1904 said that the name comes from the Portuguese "Ouve água." But still another theory is that the name is from an Algonquian word
Pennsylvania
Spoiler!
An English speaker's portmanteau of the name Penn and the Latin "sylvania" (referring to woods or forests)
Rhode Island
Spoiler!
The Dutch, from "Roodt Eylandt," "red island"
Tennessee
Spoiler!
Native American. A Cherokee name for the river
Texas
Spoiler!
The Spanish, from their name "Tejas" for the Caddo people, from the Caddo people's own word "taysha" ("friends")
Utah
Spoiler!
From the Spanish "yuta," their word for the ancient Uto-Aztecan people
Vermont
Spoiler!
From the French phrase "Mont Vert," or "green mountain" -- it's believed an English speaker misspoke and reversed the French (thinking that the adjective should come first, as it would in English) in giving it the name
Virginia, West Virginia
Spoiler!
The English, after Elizabeth I (the "Virgin Queen")
Washington
Spoiler!
Americans, after George Washington -- the family name is of course English
Wisconsin
Spoiler!
Native American. The exact etymology is not known, but likely Algonquian
Wyoming
Spoiler!
Native American. From the Algonquian "chwewamink," or "big river flat"
New York is named after the English town of York, but that town itself draws its name back to the Norse Jorvik which in turn has a Latin etymology IIRC?

I'm not sure. The Romans called it Eboracum -- I know that from playing Pendragon

the anglo-saxon name was Eoforwic which is plausibly intermediate between Eboracum and Jorvik imo

this one was easy for me because I know that Edinburgh and Copenhagen are about the same, and Berlin feels closer in latitude to Copenhagen than London does to Edinburgh.

With that said, if it was instead Berlin and e.g. Nottingham I'd totally get fooled by it. London and Berlin are closer than I thought!
