Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
i went to the first day of march madness at the MODA center in portland. it was pretty fullish by the second game. it was weird being in such a large enclosed space with so many unmasked people. not anxiety inducing or anything, just strange.
i wore an N9something while i wasnt eating or drinking and felt a little out of place.

i was the only person in my office who wore a mask for quite a while (back when the pandemic started)

i'm very happy my kid gets to do nakedface school now
i mask up when i'm around a bunch of strangers though, or interacting with like a barista that interacts with hundreds of people a day. just zero value to visible faces there to me. i don't think the mask is high value but it's not zero so i guess it's like, is it worth the discomfort

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
I mostly stopped wearing one last week, although I am actually sick now (not covid) so I'm wearing one again.
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
The only time I can remember wearing a mask this year was when I took my dad to his doctor's office

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
I don't have strong views on this under current conditions but what really baffles me are people who are still masking but with, like, a cloth mask pulled under their nose or whateverSkeletor wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 6:38 pm i'm very happy my kid gets to do nakedface school now

like I always interpreted this as a half-hearted technical compliance with the rules thing but apparently not!
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
Maybe they pull the mask over their nose when they feel unsafe, like when someone gets too close to them or they hear someone coughing.
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
China is getting mega fucked by the virus. Their super strict lockdown/quarantine policies saw them through two whole years of Covid without significant spread! But they relaxed their policies a little bit, and now they're boned. This especially sucks because they're mostly not vaccinated.
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
Or, check this out, they have no natural immunity because they thought they could keep people from ever getting it, and that was dumbAshenai wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 11:16 pm China is getting mega fucked by the virus. But why are they mostly not vaccinated?

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
Because they mostly didn't need to be! Like I said, their super-strict and extremely mandatory Covid policies kept the virus at bay for 2 years. That had its own cost though, economically and socially, and eventually they loosened restrictions a little bit. And now they're getting hit hard.
This is what their case numbers look like over the entire Covid era:

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
is it relaxed their policies or is it that there's just no stopping omicron really? i thought it was more thatAshenai wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 11:16 pm China is getting mega fucked by the virus. Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
are the chinese numbers actually credible
i remember the obviously fake flatline graph but it looks like they have some numbers that are not obviously wrong now

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
or at least, stopping omicron would’ve required even more costly policies. I think they are actually talking about relaxing their policies now though
the vaccine situation is even worse than just low uptake there, it’s low uptake *and* worse relative uptake for older people *and* most of the vaccinations being sinovac, which is much less effective than any of the vaccines used in the west
hong kong has a similar situation but is further along the path and the comparison between it and new zealand (which had a similar covid path but which vaccinated almost all of its elderly people and has high uptake rates in general) is really striking / grim
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
look at those new zealand idiots falling for the vaccine propaganda. bet they feel stupid now

shrugBottom Line
Cost of second booster is small.
Benefit of second booster is small and temporary.
If you’re at very high risk, maybe it makes sense.
Either decision is at worst a small mistake.
u gotta skate

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
yeah my understanding is the benefit of the first booster is basically that the first two shots are spaced too close together, which is mostly because we rushed the vaccines out and that was the first guess and what was tested, it's not surprising it was suboptimal

I was at my chiropractor a few weeks ago. Got into a conversation with a few people in the waiting room. One was wearing big mirror sunglasses and a mask. Completely impossible to read any kind of facial cues. I felt so incredibly awkward.Blissful wrote: ↑Sat Mar 19, 2022 12:30 pmi just wear masks because i dont like people seeing my face nowSkeletor wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 6:38 pm i'm very happy my kid gets to do nakedface school now

I wear a mask to the doctor's office so as not to worry the other visitors
That's it, I haven't worn a mask anywhere else in quite a while now
