Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
leaving aside the, uh, practical issues, I wonder what would happen if you administered the two doses continuously over the course of a few weeks rather than in two spikes
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
i would guess you would feel like absolute garbage for a few weeks and that might have other side effects?

Sounds like we might be getting the ol' hockey team back together at the end of May. Should be about time for that sort of stuff, I suppose.

More than 500 air passengers fined for defying hotel quarantine rules after landing in Vancouver and Toronto
The government couldn't provide CBC News with a total number of people who've violated its rule that passengers entering Canada be tested for COVID-19, then quarantine in a hotel while waiting for their results.
And when CBC tried to track down the total number of hotel quarantine violators, it found no evidence of fines being issued to passengers who landed in Calgary or Montreal — two of the four cities, along with Vancouver and Toronto, where international flights are allowed to land during the pandemic.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) told CBC News last week it was "aware" of 513 tickets being issued to air passengers who arrived in Toronto or Vancouver between Feb. 22 and April 25 and refused to go to a quarantine hotel.

In a survey of Americans, when asked what they think the percentage is of Covid patients who require hospitalization, the vast majority of Americans grossly overestimate the percentage, which is a complete failure of media and social media

For example, 28 percent of Republicans thought that 50 percent or more of Covid patients required hospitalization

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
zvi mowshowitz on the patent stripping:
What’s The Worst Possible Thing You Could Do?
[...]
There’s a simple solution to the problem of intellectual property if you wanted to make the situation better rather than worse. You could buy the intellectual property rights from the companies involved. So, basically, this:
It’s not that much money, everyone would be happy, and the precedent would be excellent. Pay enough, and they’ll even aid you in technology transfers. Even better, you could repeat this process with other drugs. Buy out the monopoly at its economic value, remove protections, and the people save many times that much money in costs. It’s a great idea.I talked to lots of extremely reasonable experts about the intellectual property/vaccines thing and will write a summary of their responsible expert views but my irresponsible non-expert personal opinion is we should imply give Pfizer, Moderna, J&J, etc 100 billion dollars each.
Doing this without compensation is about the worst thing one could do. If your new ideas outright save the world, we’re going to reward you by confiscating them, voiding the contracts and promises agreed upon and informing you that we are not a nation of laws. That’s exactly how not to get vaccines next time there’s a crisis, or anything else next time there’s a crisis, or really anything else useful at any time for any reason.
The message we’ve sent, loud and clear, is that we are not a nation of laws and we do not reward those who deliver the goods for us. Instead, we retain protections on things like insulin that are pure rent seeking, while taking away protections that are doing exactly what patents are designed to do: reward those who produce world-changing positive innovations via temporary ability to profit.
We are a nation of a person in charge, and if that person decides to confiscate your property because it’s good politics, well, tough.
It’s a horrible, horrible precedent. We will pay for it in money, will pay for it with our freedom, and we will ultimately pay for it in blood.
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
But we should strip the protections on insulin.
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
Yeah I have to agree with Zvi, this is an extremely stupid and/or malicious move.
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
Entwine. The worst part about it all is that it's being done out of 'benevolence'.
Pour like Hemingway's last call.

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
But I just saw an interview with Bill Gates where he said there are sensible reasons not to waive the patents

wow, [you]. that all sounds terrible. i hope it gets better for you
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
very close friend of mine is not getting vaccine due to *reasons*
current thought is that i'm just going to tell them i don't really want to talk to them or hang out with them, because i am just too upset by it. and it's true. but if things ever return to normal times, where people can interact without fear of death due to herd immunity, then maybe we can return to normal times as well
on the one hand this feels petty but on the other hand i feel like i don't have any obligation to be friends with someone who doesn't give a shit if old people die, regardless of how long or strong that friendship has been until now
