well i mean that arguments in ordinary conversation are never 'valid' or 'invalid' because ordinary language contains too many imprecisions for that to be a useful description (see above)

fact check: true
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
another point in dougs favour is that canadian health authorities are as fucking dumb as the cdc (see mask debacle from a year ago)Doug wrote:I'm not aware of any of the vaccines having been developed in CanadaJeb Bush 2012 wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 4:14 pm fortunately khaos is canadianunderstating the case a bit but better than pretending we have no idea what the effect is imoPublic Health Agency of Canada wrote: Although COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting sick, scientists are still learning how well vaccines prevent you from spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 to others, even if you do not have symptoms. lol. and what about being typhoid mary for his 80+yo grandparent and 60+yo parentsDoug wrote:Anyway, the overall point is that you should more worried about your friend than worried your friend is Typhoid Mary
at this point im leaning towards maybe i was being overly emotional and i should just pack this away and not think about/discuss it with him anymore
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
i think it's still useful. for example in my original response to dantes i think the distinction helped clarify my beliefs (that i'm certain it's okay to cut yourself off from mini-typhoid mary, but that i am uncertain if said person in question is actually a mini-typhoid mary)Rylinks wrote:well i mean that arguments in ordinary conversation are never 'valid' or 'invalid' because ordinary language contains too many imprecisions for that to be a useful description (see above)

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
that was not a pro-Public Health Agency of Canada post
the point is, even if for some reason you felt the need to ignore the evidence on transmission until your national disease control agency acknowledged it, you'd be in luck

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
but since mongrel isn't here to whine about it being brought up, yes, I do remember debating how much faith we should put in the Public Health Agency of Canada vis-a-vis other sources of information
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
i'll never forget that discussion, i think. being told i sound like an anti-vaxxer because i said i used my brain to determine that masks are good

immediately followed by a discussion on whether it's okay to go outside! real early pandemic hours
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
So mongrel launched a conversation that devolved into idiocy? Am I hearing this correctly?
Pour like Hemingway's last call.
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
the conversation was fine. it mostly involved telling mongrel he was dumb

i don't remember thisJeb Bush 2012 wrote:immediately followed by a discussion on whether it's okay to go outside! real early pandemic hours

oh yeah i remember this now! i guess my brain only has room for one stupid mongrel-related anecdote at time
Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
I'm trying to be polite, but I don't know how you all can stand to post with some of those people. When I stopped posting there the general stress in my life went down quite a bit.

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
that was one conversation a year ago. cbf is gone, the politics thread is gone. it's all uphill dude
edit: not that i recommend you go back

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
CBF wasn't the only reason I left, though he was a major reason. There are however several other people (Jack is not on that list) I don't really want to have to interact with any longer for various different reasons. The degrees of pathos, lack of self awareness, unwillingness to take any kind of responsibility (personal or otherwise), and management's willingness to coddle sickness weren't healthy.
EDIT: And to be clear that was a two way street. I found myself becoming increasingly vicious. I know I went over the top in some of my responses to some people, but you should have seen some of the responses to Mongrel/CBF/ewie/etc. that I chose not to make. I was trying to inflict as much damage as I could, which is very much not who I am or ever wanted to be.
I very much left for my own sake. That place was a cesspool and it was dragging me down to its level.
Pour like Hemingway's last call.

yet you also refuse to use the ignore list functionality
(not interested in having this same conversation again, just poking fun / rolling my eyes at "I don't know how you all can stand to post with some of those people" because the answer is that i use the ignore list functionality)

Well that only raises the question whom you expect Dantes not to ignore

Re: Charho-oh Virus Thread
The ignore list is poorly implemented and breeds FOMO as it currently stands. It didn't work for me, I ended up clicking on the ignored posts.
Ideally the way it should be implemented is that when you ignore someone they cannot see your posts, and their posts are completely suppressed for you.
Once I ignore CBF (by way of example) he never should have the ability to interact with me. At all, until I decide to remove the ignore.

I too am a fan of the ignore list although it seems like a bad board feature that my notifications still light up if jack quotes me
