the resistance ranges over many orders of magnitude depending on purity, so i think people usually use it as a quick check and don't worry about the effect of the distance or the water dimensions

So role of thumb, if you drop an extension cord in your water, and it doesn't electrocute you, it's safe to drink.
Pour like Hemingway's last call.
Re: Food thread
so if the water "resistivity" was 20 ohm-metres, you could fill a cylinder with it and measure resistance across the height of it (basically make a wire made of water)
then the cross-sectional area of the cylinder could be used to figure out the ohms per meter.
if the cross sectional area of the water-wire was 0.01m^2, then the resistance would be 20/0.01 -> 2,000 ohms per meter, i think?
i usually just look up ohms/meters for cables in a table
then the cross-sectional area of the cylinder could be used to figure out the ohms per meter.

Re: Food thread
Conductance and resistance are reciprocal, one is per meter and the other is times meters

Re: Food thread
i dont understand what you're saying hereDoug wrote:Conductance and resistance are reciprocal, one is per meter and the other is times meters
i'm reasonably sure there's no specific term for ohms per meter
resistance : ohms
conductivity : 1/ohms
"resistivity" : ohm*meters
Re: Food thread
I'm saying that while resistance is resistivity times meters divided by cross-section, conductance is conductivity times cross-section divided by meters
The first is per meter while the second is times meters
I don't think so either. But siemens per meter is conductivity, and siemens are the reciprocal of ohmsi'm reasonably sure there's no specific term for ohms per meter

this makes sense now but i dont think it jives with what you first said!Doug wrote:I'm saying that while resistance is resistivity times meters divided by cross-section, conductance is conductivity times cross-section divided by meters

Oh you asked if conductivity should be per distanceKhaos wrote: ↑Wed May 26, 2021 9:25 pmthis makes sense now but i dont think it jives with what you first said!Doug wrote:I'm saying that while resistance is resistivity times meters divided by cross-section, conductance is conductivity times cross-section divided by meters

I was trying to say that yes, it is, when we incorporate it into conductance
But it's not ohms per distance, it's (the reciprocal of ohms) per distance

yea. i said conductivity but i meant resistivity because really who uses conductivity that way any way. no-one, that's whoDoug wrote:Oh you asked if conductivity should be per distanceKhaos wrote: ↑Wed May 26, 2021 9:25 pmthis makes sense now but i dont think it jives with what you first said!Doug wrote:

then i am contractually obligated to inform you that you meant "jibes"
u gotta skate

that doesnt sound right

google says that jive is also acceptable

yeah personally i don't care about that one

Re: Food thread
So to get back to this, then yes your instincts are correct, the resistance would increase the more distance had to be covered, and also yes, people talk about resistance a lot more than conductanceKhaos wrote: ↑Wed May 26, 2021 9:40 pmyea. i said conductivity but i meant resistivity because really who uses conductivity that way any way. no-one, that's whoDoug wrote:Oh you asked if conductivity should be per distance

Re: Food thread
yes i know this i was actually just curious about the specific units of resistivity because ohms / m is meaningless outside of cable reference tablesDoug wrote:So to get back to this, then yes your instincts are correct, the resistance would increase the more distance had to be coverede
Re: Food thread
Finally, my area of expertise. We use a conductivity sensor on the station to monitor the purity of the water we use to scrub the suit water loops. They measure in microsiemens per cm.

btw the Spongebob burger above is how I make my burgers now. It's quite incredible
And yeah I have to have all the stuff, fresh onion and tomato, etc.

although if you're not going to melt it on the burger directly it loses many of its advantages
