US State Flags rated by a foreigner

Post by Faceless » Wed Apr 08, 2020 1:25 pm

https://tiermaker.com/create/usa-state-flags

I've rated them entirely based on a first pass; most of these I don't even recognise who they belong to either.

Tennessee, South Carolina, and New Mexico are just my favourites aesthetically, and Colorado is an iconic and familiar look. Several of them (e.g. Florida) lose a spot from having an overly complex seal design. Iowa would probably jump at least two points if it were just a tricolore with an eagle on it. Washington is easily the best and most interesting "Crest on a plain background". Hawaii and Arizona gain a lot of points by feeling non-American; the former is one that I'd guess belonged to the Pitcairn Islands or something, and the latter feels oriental. Mississippi lost points for the confederate flag; wikipedia has some alternatives listed that I like a lot more.

Fun Fact: Missouri's flag has more bears on it than have ever been in Missouri.

I've always thought SC's flag looks like the type of flag that would get you shot if you were wearing it on a t-shirt in a place like SC.

You need to rank the territories.

American Samoa is great.

(also you left out the Chicago flag, silly)

I have a big PA flag hanging about 10 feet left of me. It's mildly better enlarged! But it's not like that takes it out of the "crest with blue background" tier.

SC and TN look like the DAK logo and the BUF flag respectively and despite all the obvious issues with fascism they do at least do logos well.

I just did the ones that tiermaker provided. American Samoa is a solid A or S tier though, and the Chicago flag requires a full infographic explaining the meaning behind the point on each star so it wouldn't fit on the tier list

Also you called out Mississippi, but you may not be aware that Alabama's flag is also based on a Confederate battle flag

Interestingly, Florida's flag, which looks so similar to Alabama's, is not based on a Confederate flag but rather on the Burgundian Cross of St. Andrew

Ah, that's interesting. I'd assumed Floridas would indeed be based on Spanish colonial history for obvious reasons.

With Alabama's, I guess it's a case that something inspired/referncing the confederate flag feels better aesthetically than directly having the confederate flag? I think Mississippi would look more appealing to me if it were even just a white or blue saltire on red sort of design?

i mean it makes rational zero sense that "I like X because it looks like the BUF flag and I don't like Y because it looks like the confederate flag" so these aren't like "mississippi flag bad for wrongthink" or anything

Yeah the Burgundian Cross literally would have flown over St. Augustine

The beaver lies on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs as it struggles to turn itself over but it can't

I think you under rate Oklahoma's flag. The seal is pretty unique, but it does lose a lot of points for the very boring blue background (and it is a very bad shade of blue).

Whaaat Maryland is clearly S tier. It's iconic, everyone knows what it is, and it's the most used and riffed on state flag in LearnedLeague by far

I'm curious why WA isn't F-tier

I do kinda like the flag but it's got too much detail for a flag and then, the only reason it's not "blue background with a crest" tier is because the background is green

Would Washington have ever even set foot in the area that is now WA? I guess I've never thought about it, but that seems weird.

Also, I can't tell what state the one is in the f-tier with the "crest on blue" but it's not centered and I like their moxy.
