I was already psyched for it, this trailer is just gravy.

Really good gravy.

Nope.

You have to understand, we went from "you have to watch it in order to support the genre," to having a veritable smorgasbord of options. I get to pick and choose what I consume.

BTW, if you haven't watched WandaVision yet, you should. It is very nearly brilliant.

The Loki thing sounds like a fun concept but it is so hard to make time shenanigans good or even watchable. I'm expecting some bombastic setpieces and not a lot of stakes or tension or storytelling.

I'd like to be proven wrong because I love me some time travel stories, but I'm not excited.

Wandavision is one of those shows I've wondered about but the premise seems so goofy and both of the characters seemed bland an uninteresting to me in the MCU movies I've seen them in. (I understand this is probably the movies' fault, not the characters.) I might give it a chance one day!

It's pretty good, some aspects of it are really good, but at the same time it's way too long, and has a villain problem

I had absolutely no interest in it and I only started it out of boredom the weekend before last. I ended up watching until almost 4:00AM.

It’s really good.

Doug is right in that it has a bit of a villain problem, and that’s why I say it is nearly brilliant. The final episode collapses into some standard hero fare, but everything leading up to then is inspired.

apparently, uh, Invincible is airing on ... amazon, let's say. Invincible was really good as a comic, and apparently is pretty good as a tv show. Plus it has JK Simmons! Might be worth checking out.

im glad you guys are enjoying them. ive just never seen oversaturation of a niche genre like this in my life. i was trying to think of an analogue, and the best i could come up with are westerns in the 50s or 60s.

Oversaturation is not a thing like it used to be, because airtime is not limited. There can be, and are, any number of shows about anything!

You're hearing about a lot of superhero shows, not because there are a lot of them, but because there are a lot of them that are popular, which is the opposite of oversaturation. Superheroes are in right now!

i think we are using this word differently, and upon reflection i think you were using it more correctly.

there are definitely a lot more out and being produced now than there were. im constantly seeing new ones up on [insert streaming service here]. i have been for the last decade or so on tv, and even longer in cinema. it seems like even the most insignificant of characters is getting a show, and new characters, and even new worlds, are being developed to meet the demand or perceived demand.

i probably should have used just "saturated" as opposed to "oversaturated", though, because youre right, they are clearly popular based on what im hearing in this thread and ratings and ticket sales and such.

I wonder what the next big thing is gonna be. I hope it's wizards! Wizards have never really gotten their share of the spotlight, Game of Thrones was as close as they ever got, and it's a shame. Wizards are even better than superheroes.

wizards are still like, a mid-level theme

off the top of my head I can think of two currently-ongoing tv shows based on the "wizard school" theme specifically (the order, which is garbage, and the magicians, which started very-strong-if-flawed and now is only fine)

The Magicians was an amazing book, then the sequels were just okay. I heard that the show was worse than the book in many ways so I never checked it out.

It's a great book, though!

the show is very different from the book (both thematically and plot-wise, there's tons of individual events that happen in both but they're embedded in totally different plots with mostly different characters) so it's not surprising some people who loved the book would be disappointed to find that it doesn't hit the same themes. I would say the first ~season and a half are excellent*, though, and I didn't hate the rest of the show either (except when they did musical episodes, that I hated)

*a lot of people disliked the rape plotline and I don't blame them, it's also in the books but it's a lot more upsetting in the tv show imo

watchmen said it would be pirates and in retrospect it's kind of surprising that the success of pirates of the caribbean didn't spawn more imitators

I didn't mind the rape plotline but it was also nothing amazing imo. My issue was more that Julia's character felt way less defined than Quentin's, and traumatizing your MC falls flat if you don't define her well enough for the reader to understand and care about her state of mind.

I got the strong impression that Quentin was an authorial self-insert, which is probably why his personality is painted with such confident and vivid strokes. Julia is, I dunno. She didn't feel real to me.

i think pirates are a tough because the heroes are always actually fundamentally bad people on some level. its hard to make a thing out of that with concentrated long lasting main stream appeal over multiple iterations.
