Re: this thread is for posting in
last night, after we had put down the children for the night, my wife goes up stairs and whisper yells at me "[leprosy] come see how [daughter] is sleeping. come quick." i walk in, and she is dead asleep, hanging off the bed at her waste, completely upside down, with her arms hanging. ive drawn a diagram.
i did not know this was possible.

good news: your child has (presumably) the powers of a human along with at least one of the powers of a bat
Re: this thread is for posting in
I found my kid asleep once in what was basically the muslim prayer position. He wasn't facing Mecca though.
Re: this thread is for posting in
did you check?
Re: this thread is for posting in
He was facing west but I guess depending on angle maybe. Assuming arcs of over 180 degrees are legal. Does anyone ever face backwards just to needle their flat earther muslim friends?
Re: this thread is for posting in
west is no good. i need to point 30 degrees east of north where i live
if arcs over 180 are legal then i think you'd need to be facing southwest

The island Tematagi in French Polynesia is almost exactly on the other side of the world from Mecca, so if you map Muslim praying direction on the islands in the area, they're not parallel at all. I think that's fun, and if they really wanted to get into the spirit of things I think they'd pray straight down. Which...I guess actually is the praying position.

Re: this thread is for posting in
I don't know if there are any actual Muslims there, but I am the sort of person that, if I were a Muslim, I would want to go there just to pray in an odd direction. I guess "going as far away as possible from Mecca" is kind of the opposite of usual Muslim behavior.

Re: this thread is for posting in
apparently the "antipole" is in the ocean, so you couldn't just go there to pray in any direction

what if you have to be on land (i have no idea if you need to be on land)
extrapolating from this, if you're in space or on mars, do you need to draw a line from you to earth, then pray perpendicular to that line in the direction of mecca? that sounds awesome
edit: i think you'd also have to project that line onto the surface of the planet you're on too? this sounds confusing now

I think if you get farther away, you're probably allowed to pray in the direction of Earth. People inside Mecca have a specific thing they pray toward.

muslims have been going on long sea voyages for almost as long as islam has been a thing so this can't possibly be the rule, right?
to be fully consistent with the normal rule I guess you also have to orient your spaceship so that the "ground" for you is facing the earth (assuming that lying on your side while facing mecca would ordinarily be frowned upon)
Re: this thread is for posting in
yeah its probably just the standard reduced prayers while travelling ruleJeb Bush 2012 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 7:32 pmmuslims have been going on long sea voyages for almost as long as islam has been a thing so this can't possibly be the rule, right?

I was reading about it recently! I was reading world history to make myself feel educated, but it was really The Cartoon History of the Universe II, becaues I like my history in cartoon form. That particular chapter was a little unusual on account of the main character not appearing on-panel.

Re: this thread is for posting in
so there actually is guidance on this out there https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qibla#Outer_space
so it looks like they went with the "straight line" option rather than trying to keep strict consistency with the great circles rule used on the earth's surfaceThe International Space Station (ISS) orbits the earth at high speed—the direction from it to Mecca changes significantly within a few seconds.[23] Before his flight to the ISS, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor requested, and the Malaysian National Fatwa Council provided, guidelines which have been translated into multiple languages.[95] The council wrote that the qibla determination should be "based on what is possible" and recommended four options, saying that one should pray toward the first option if possible and, if not, fall back successively on the later ones:[23]
the Kaaba itself
the position directly above the Kaaba at the altitude of the astronaut's orbit
the Earth in general
"wherever"
Re: this thread is for posting in
well these are just what a bunch of guys decided. i think "whatever" is official though, because if you don't know which way to pray "whatever" is acceptable
Re: this thread is for posting in
A lot of religion is "what a bunch of guys decided," though. And that's the part I think is fun! People sitting around debating whether alien food is kosher or whatever.
