It was all connectivity. My speakers work just fine. I think it was even a regional discord thing rather than my internet connection, so I expect to fare just fine next time

thought about going to the Root Stuff thread but since this appears to be where roots being talked about il post it here

I saw someone in another venue say this:
J wrote:the vagabond has his own set of rules, everyone else is competing for territory and gaining points by taking it and exploiting it, but the vagabond isnt an empire, he's just a guy, so he wanders from place to place doing quests and getting points for that
and the only way the other players interact with the vagabond is either by helping him (in exchange for stuff), or by attacking him, but when you attack him you use one of your own precious actions and he just has to fuck off into the woods to fix whatever he had that you broke
so he's only lost, like, half a turn, and then can just pop out and start again
so he effectively cant be hurt and is able to gather victory points independent of everyone else, so he effectively puts a timer on the game
you cant stop him, so he eventually will win. the only thing you can do is win before him
what do you think of this doug? is it a fair assessment or is forcing the game to end Good Actually and the analysis is misguided. the playgroup this guy is from seem like they try to avoid playing with the vagabond the majority of the time, claiming that the faction ruins the game

A lot of people think the Vagabond is overpowered, I'm not sure if he's overpowered but he's definitely top tier

When the Vagabond wins, then yeah, whoever came in second didn't do enough to slow the Vagabond. And I see games where nobody really does anything to slow the Vagabond, or people even help the Vagabond, and then they're like oh shit he's going to win. And it's way way too late to stop him.

If you're not the Vagabond, and you're crafting a Vagabond item at the beginning of the game, that's probably incorrect. And some items are worse than others. Don't make swords for him

what if you're crafting a vagabond item because your a faction that doesn't get VP quickly and you want to ally (i hope i remembered the rules right)

Mentally you should count this as using the Vagabond to pressure the other non-Vagabonds. But if they ignore this pressure then you might simply be making the Vagabond win

Cost to you is a card you presumably didn't care about otherwise, but then the Vagabond gives you a card he didn't care about, and takes the item. You also get the VP for making the item. So you net zero cards plus or minus. Basically you are getting VP for giving the Vagabond an item. So now we need to know whether your VP helped you more than the Vagabond's item helped the Vagabond

Well at the beginning of the game, I am convinced the answer is no

There is, but the Vagabond can only choose to ally with the faction with the lowest number of VP, and by doing that he abandons his own win condition. I don't think it's usually worth it.

Dominance Cards and Coalitions. In games
with four or more players, the Vagabond can
activate a dominance card to form a coalition
with the player with the fewest victory points
other than himself, placing his score marker on
the chosen player’s faction board. If there is a
tie for fewest, he chooses one tied player. If the
chosen player wins the game, the Vagabond also
wins. (The Vagabond no longer scores victory points.
He cannot form a coalition with a player who has
already activated a dominance card.)

Only the Vagabond can initiate it, and only with whoever is losing. I figure this entire game mechanic happens approximately zero percent

It feels like a safety valve, it makes sure the Vagabond can't just be bullied out of the game no matter what. I don't know if it's necessary, but I haven't played enough of the game to know.

I watched a Root tournament on YouTube, multiple games over multiple videos. I think a Vagabond won every game that a Vagabond was in. And this was a tournament! There was no Vagabond in the finals at all, so a Vagabond didn't win the finals. But before you think that that makes the Vagabond OP, know that people were crafting things for the Vagabond when (I believe) they should not have, and people obviously didn't do enough to slow the Vagabond.
