Re: sports
this weekend i was pretty sick, spent a lot of time on my back (or side), and sort of accidently slipped into obsessing over a sport ive never seen and barely thought about my whole life. i think formula one might be one of the strangest and most intriguing competitive traditions we engage in as a species. im not entirely convinced what i experienced this weekend actually exists in real life, and is not the product of some convoluted set of fever dreams.

Re: sports
actual results:
jazz
suns
nuggets
clippers
mavs
blazers
lakers
warriors
grizzlies
spurs
pelicans
kings
wolves
thunder
rockets
//
*the rockets did not keep Harden
*the lakers had bad injury luck, though if they don't then probably they finish more like ~3 and not 1
*i was low on the suns, but so was everyone
*i had grizzlies 11 pels 9 but actually it was the reverse; apart from that (and the rockets) i had the right top 10
not too surprising that taking 538's projection and not tweaking it very much gets an ok prediction

oh i bet the idea is to point out how much stronger the west is than the east
i agree that that is humorous

Re: sports
it was a few pages back. the conversation isnt as long as i recalled. i just critiqued your list saying the suns should be on the bottom of the first tier. like half of the nba ringer guys were all about the suns all season (kevin o conner, raja bell, rusillo off the top of my head).
i dont know if anyone thought theyd be the 2 seed, and certainly not the two seed following utah. i think the clues were definitely there--suns dominating in the bubble, booker and ayton getting another year, chris paul, etc.

Re: sports
to be clear,
im taking pacers over hornets, wizards over celtics, and pacers over celtics in the east.
im taking grizzlies over spurs, lakers over warriors, and warriors over grizzlies in the west.

Re: sports
ah
i think it would be very funny if the west went 7. warriors 8. lakers
all of that maneuvering by the clippers to get out of the lakers' bracket only for the warriors to flip it again

Re: sports
for you non-NBA people
this is how it ended up. but on the last day of the regular season
* the nuggets wanted to lose their game (to the blazers) because if they were to win they could end up matched up with the lakers instead of the blazers
* the clippers wanted to lose their game so that they would get to play the mavericks in the first round and also wouldn't have to play the lakers until the conference finals (assuming the lakers win the first play-in game). except! their opponent (the thunder) also wanted to lose (to get better lottery odds). it was a very fun game to watch. the clippers were able to pull out the loss by taking one of their deep bench guys and feeding him over and over; i think he finished 5 for 21.
* the mavericks also wanted to lose their game because it gave them a chance to avoid the clippers in the first round

Re: sports
i have faith they can make it a gentlemans sweep.
i heard a theory that westbrook was trying to steer them to a philly matchup, as opposed to a nets one. fun idea, and reasonablish given all the gaming in the west we saw. i gotta think they would have taken any playoff spot given the chance, though, and im not sure id want to face that pacers team we saw last night. westbrook (and beal) certainly looked like dog plop last night, whatever the reason.

Re: sports
when i was watching last night, i started wondering whether a reduced number fans, but allowing fans, might actually give some teams, like boston, a little more of a home field edge. you can really hear specific fans a lot better without all the crowd noise generated by tens of thousands of people being there.
i could totally see some drunk masshole stereotype in the upper section yelling "YOU FUCKIN SUCK WESTBROOK" over and over and that getting to westbrook or [insert targeted player here].

watching Q2 of blazers/nuggets, lillard is 8/10 from 3 and has hit his last 6 3pt attempts
Jokic is 10/12 (1/2 from 3)
NBA playoffs so good

Re: sports
i like this framing. i would quibble with
*BOS being that soul-search-y this was a weird season and maybe Kemba is a problem going forward, but Time Lord looks good and they're young and they could easily bounce back next year
*DEN being that "What?!" - would it really be that surprising for them to lose when they're missing Murray, Barton, and Dozier? though the latter two might come back later on in the series
the clippers maneuvering their way into a round 1 series with Dallas and then losing would be really funny
