Web 3.0 is a marketing phrase. Blockchain is too, though it's also an answer looking for a question.Luna wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 3:10 amthe federated universe / fediverse is more than just twitter / mastadon. it's actually what web 3.0 is supposed to be, sort of. but that got hijacked by the crypto guys. i guess technically it was going to have something to do with the blockchain, so ok, and this stuff isn't truly decentralized now because you still have guys on top hosting / controlling the server itself. but it's sort of whatever because if those admins do suck you just surf on the splintersDantes wrote:

Honestly, I'm a huge fan of interop, standards, and choice. It's worked really well with Browsers. I have no idea why it wouldn't work with something like Twitter.

Re: Google makes everything worse
you could argue web 2.0 was a marketing phrase but it was also a real thing that changed the internet forever
Re: Google makes everything worse
Both statements can be true at the same time. They can also be true and false at different times.

all of these ideas seem much worse than twitter-as-it-is and I hope it either survives or something broadly similar replaces it
I don't think mastodon is going to be that thing but if it is, I expect it will be by some individual mastodon instance taking over and all the "decentralised" stuff becoming vestigial

ideally it would survive in a way that involves elon musk losing tens of billions of dollars though
Re: Google makes everything worse
Trump's been reinstated on Twitter (there was a vote, apparently!) I dunno if he's gonna start posting again, but I assume yes, because attention.

refusing to post there after musk has gone to the trouble of this whole dog and pony show would be a pretty epic flex though

original web 3.0 was "the semantic web" where you would publish rdf triples or whatever the fuck and this would somehow be useful

the one thing google makes better is wifi. couldn't believe how good the google mesh wifi was however many years ago when i got it. but it did get outdated as internet speeds got better and wifi became the limiting factor. just upgraded to their new nest pro and my wifi is so much better, both for the above reason, but also better coverage through the house with fewer devices in the mesh

Obviously the crash affected him, but he's a long hodl-er and this is literally his retirement plan so it didn't seem like he was emotionally or motivationally affected more than I would be if my retirement account took a big hit. He said it's a good buy opportunity if I wanted to get in and he's probably not wrong.
He did mention that some time before the crash he moved his stuff into 100% bitcoin. He explained that it's the only true decentralized crypto and he has lost faith in how Ethereum is being centrally managed. I didn't ask him for his opinion on NFTs and now I wish I did.

Yeah true. To Google's credit though, I've tried DuckDuckGo and have found the difference in quality noticeable.
Re: Google makes everything worse
Wow, YouTube search got real bad. Serves you results interspersed with a separate chunk of random stuff other people watched, and then a chunk of things "for you" wholly unrelated to what you searched for.
Re: Google makes everything worse
Use Bing. Search is good and ad count is lower.
