Re: Google makes everything worse
brave always struck me as the browser for people who want to pretend they care about privacy. it's still probably a lot better than Chrome though

Re: Google makes everything worse
it has some neat features totally outside of being a web browser, like, uh, tor support, and now they even support some decentralized domains, and then they have a thing where you can give fractions of money to people who create content ... somehow. that's ... cool. i don't know all the details but i do know that they didnt give that money to a guy, tom scott, way back when. this is an old fucking controversy though and maybe the system just didnt work then. how long does this have to haunt the guysCrunchums wrote:hey arti do you have thoughts on Brave https://brave.com/

but then, uh, last year, the guy running the thing got caught sneaking affiliate links into the browser for crypto stuff, so everytime you went to <some> website you were actually going to said website through the brave affiliate link. running a browser is tricky and making cash off of a browser is even trickier, so it's kind of understandable. almost understandable? not really
firefox got just as fucking desperate a few years back, and very recently just laid off like two hundred and fifty guys, for an idea of how hard it is to make cash. that's why guys like google and the explorer team have so much of an easier time because uh who gives a shit if their browser makes any money? and chrome is currently using its monopoly to basically obliterate the internet advertising industry, while protecting their own, so even if chrome makes them negative money, uh, it's doing ok
but anyway, after a guy does that once, some scummy thing, then you gotta kinda wonder. it's like if the d00d broke into your home and then you just continued living next to them / near them, because, eh, it's probably fine. they didn't think they'd get caught and they did, so, you know

Re: Google makes everything worse
if people are concerned re privacy, brave's major selling point, then vivaldi has extensively documented everything that their browser does re privacy, and it's even in very plain speech:
https://vivaldi.com/privacy/browser/
they do collect some shit, though, so absolutely they could be losing points, albeit they promise they're anonymizing it. and then re the information im not sure why they need your specs but location / whether or not you use the browser does make sense. they make all of their money selling being a bookmark to people.
i guess they could make that a little bit more optional like how steam occasionally asks if you'd like to participate in a survey. and the guy who made it is already rich because he sold opera to china, but he does have an office and a lot of staff that he's got to pay for.

Google made it so difficult to turn off giving them your information, like your location, which you can't do anyway, that even their employees can't figure it out

Re: Google makes everything worse
There's actually been a lot of Windows stuff happening recently. We just got a new "big" windows update, the May update, but it wasn't at all significant. There's only two of these a year and it was one of them so it still gets to be called the big update. Later this year, in the fall, we're getting the second, and that's gonna be, like, actually relevant. Windows is being completely overhauled, at least graphically. Outside of the new icons, though, people probably aren't going to notice, and you might not have noticed that they flattened their colours in your start menu in the last big update. But, look, in the design space going square edges to rounded edges (rounded edges to squared edges in eight / ten to round again) is kind of a big deal. Outside of that though we don't actually know because the redesign hasn't actually been announced, just teased a bit.
Also Windows Chromebook competitor operating system got axed. It hadn't actually been released yet and it was kind of silly that Microsoft was trying to make a worse version (simpler version!) of their operating system ,instead of maybe just spacing things out a bit better for fingers in ten, but what do I know. One of the big pushes for this fall or the new windows is that theyre going to work with developers so that those guys get a fair shake or whatever ... in this totally free and open operating system that doesn't take a cut of anything because you'd release your shit on a webpage and not the windows store, obviously

I don't like the round corners and the taskbar looks horrendous. Everything else seems basically the same

Re: Google makes everything worse
there's kind of no point to the start menu anymore if it's just a collection of icons that you could just have be in a folder, but i guess there's also no reason to not just have a folder of popular shortcuts with a special icon either
edit - and you can't have the shortcuts not be in a folder, and instead just be centered on the taskbar, because then that's just apple's os

Re: Google makes everything worse
I already have a folder of popular shortcuts, it's called the desktop
