scotland is divided into highland and lowland, the lowland is the more populous and richer part (going back into medieval times, maybe as long as it's been populated idk)

I assume that there must be many, so as to create a true contrast with the Highlander

big sciota 3.mp4
(65.05 MiB) Downloaded 4 times
(here is the thing i am learning from if you want to hear it played better)
clawhammer feels much more about having solid right-hand fundamentals, and i can't tell if i have the right idea and i just need more practice or if i am doing it wrong
the internet suggests i'm supposed to be using my wrist and not my arm, but like in what plane am i supposed to be going back and forth? it seems like different good-people do it differently
like this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOAWlPetvpA&t=59s / https://youtu.be/aCZVwSf1nSU?t=45
and this guy https://youtu.be/n9eGy1nkfZo?t=76
are doing completely different things! and they are both literally professional clawhammer banjo players!
and the instructional videos are all over the place too
https://youtu.be/HwoPcG6dQjA?t=404
https://youtu.be/EZIRdV2Q07A?t=922

https://youtu.be/2a2RVFb3wXs?list=PLimF ... O0Ly&t=475
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKR83zX ... 7&index=22
apparently abigail washburn uses both her index and middle fingers https://youtu.be/F5LeYKLhk6Q?t=134 man that sounds so good
i think that simultaneously 1) this means that really i can just do whatever works for me 2) i think i need to be moving less in-and-out (i.e. closer/further to the head) and more up and down (i.e. parallel to the head)?

i had to watch the video twice because i didnt even notice the first time, but you're playing that with the back of your finger? doesn't that feel awful?

edit - it sounds good at least

clawhammer uses the back of your fingernail (plus the front or your thumb), yep. i've been keeping my middle fingernail grown out to make it easier
it definitely felt awful when i was first trying to learn it - it didn't make any sense to me, like how is this even supposed to work (i started with scruggs style for a reason!), and often i'd hit the string with the area where the skin meets the nail (the "Eponychium", apparently) and it would both hurt a little and get a little ripped up, but i kept at it and eventually it made more sense and i was able to hit it with my fingernail most of the time

Listening to Bjork's fourth album, Vespertine, not an album that I know at all. I'm finding it interesting but actually challenging -- often beat-free and ethereal

This is the first song and it is far out

It is my 15 year anniversary of working at my company, and they gave me a catalog of gifts to select from. I can get something sensible like a desk chair or a watch. Or I can get:

I don't actually think it's particularly close, the only reason I'm even thinking about this is there's a part of my brain that is sure this is a ridiculous idea, serious adults do not get an electric mandolin because they can.

This xkcd never really did it for me. I don't think adults don't have ball pits because they are uptight/stodgy, it's because all the novelty of a ball pit has been exhausted by the time you become an adult. Like, I don't need to go in ball pit anymore. I'm good.

the ball pit in that comic is just an example

one thing that's actually huge is landing your thumb on the top string even on strokes when you're not going to use your thumb to sound the top string, because it's way easier to be consistent when your hand has a consistent stopping point.
idk if my fundamentals are perfect, but implementing that that took me from "this feels iffy" to "ok i feel like i can actually do this"
