A lot of people don't remember this, but when the first trailer came out for Top Gun, they didn't have Danger Zone yet to use in the trailer. They knew they were getting it, and that they wanted the movie and the song to be associated together, but they didn't quite have the song. So they used Stranger Eyes by the Cars for the first trailer instead, on the idea that it has the same feel

This is kinda similar to how while George Lucas was editing the original Star Wars, he was waiting on John Williams' score, and used Holst The Planets to have something to listen to while editing

I've always felt that Top Gun is one of those movies that is only held together by nostalgia. I never realized until now that it was actually nostalgia and a really good song.

Yeah, that is a great song. There was some really top shelf music made in the 70's.

still working at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaS4-nSGE8A
that first recording that i made i was at a tempo where the video ended up being 4:23 long; the one that i just recorded ended up being 3:06
the two videos that i've been learning from are 2:23 and 2:15 long, so i've got a ways to go still
and of course i could always play it more consistently; it took a lot of takes to make this and there are still a few mistakes in there
still, i am pretty pleased with my progress (and also still with being able to play it at all in the first place, heh) :)

Crunchums wrote: Wed Dec 01, 2021 11:14 pm so really we're talking about the two non-melody notes in between that B and A
(i suppose i could try messing around with non-melody notes in other places as well)
2nd string can't be first and 3rd string can't be second
4th or 5th string second would be a pain so throw those out
so options are
1 2
3 1
3 2
4 1
4 2
5 1
5 2
(but 2nd fret for 1st and 4th strings because Em)
time to play around with those options i guess
messing around with these again. i think there are two options that i like
1.2 2: https://voca.ro/1lab2jIHSrPF
5 1.2: https://voca.ro/15X0vQqW6ZN9
(5 2 also sounds ok but it doesn't stand out at all compared to "normal" (i.e. 5 1) and it should stand out)
i'm curious if pterrus (or anyone else) has opinions about which sounds better? imo
Spoiler!
the first one sounds better. the chord change is really on the melody note, so i think it's better to introduce the "different" note closer to it (which also gives the string more time on that note)

i got a book that has AKUS guitar/banjo tabs https://smile.amazon.com/dp/0769212328? ... ct_details
today i learned to play this part https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO2dEPjqxaY&t=56s (literally just that ~8 second part where there are no vocals)
solong.mp4
(14.29 MiB) Downloaded 4 times
it took me a while because just playing it per the book didn't sound right (i think one of the notes is straight up different) but eventually i figured it out
now i just gotta speed it up, but it's so short and full speed is not that fast so i am very optimistic
the banjo solo is gonna be much much harder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO2dEPjqxaY&t=107s
kinda disappointed it didn't have tabs for all of the backup parts but oh well, it's still great value (only $9 used; $5 and then $4 shipping because it was from some Goodwill)

good news: it works. bad news, the vocal acapella for norwegian wood is very low quality, and i imagine it was split by an AI from the album track. so unless there's a better version released, it's going to sound pretty rough
norwegian army.mp3
(1.83 MiB) Downloaded 8 times
the timings on some of the vocals are off, but i didn't want to devote too much time to polishing it (hope you understand).
