"It's an ass-climbing whale" - Metallica, For Whom the Bell Tolls, S&M album version

The actual lyric is "It's the last time you will"

I had no idea the Manfred Mann song was a cover and that the original was Bruce Springsteen; I learned this from the Stern interview. I think it's fair to say the cover was a massive improvement.

I think whichever you hear first becomes "the way it should sound"

And yeah now that you know it's Springsteen, you can tell from the lyrics, right

Springsteen asked Jackson Browne early in his career, do you have any tips, and Jackson Browne allegedly told him, you know you don't have to say a million words each line

Oh shit, so you guys know that All Along the Watchtower is a cover, right

It's a Bob Dylan song, but the Jimi Hendrix version is generally regarded as 10 times better

covering a song like hotel california makes sense, right? not really because why would you cover that. you're not going to do it better

but covering, all along the watchtower. it's literally just bob dylan wanting to get out of a record contract and talking about what a shit situation it is. i guess that might be universal to a music artist, though. and then, like, maybe it speaks to how you can kinda do anything with a song?

The original "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley came on the radio the other day and I definitely heard that one first but the Ataris version is a clear upgrade to my millennial ears.

Oh I would say that whole album is great. The songwriting is just really tight and they play with song structure enough to make it interesting. I think the vocals work. I mean yeah it's not a technical masterpiece or anything but that's not the point of a band like this. I hadn't listened to this album for years and I put it on a few months ago and rocked the fuck out, it holds up.

I know absolutely nobody cares about my metal picks but I'm adding Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done, that album is a masterpiece.

it's hard to imagine a person not enjoying some metal, because there certainly is a lot of it. power metal / symphonic metal is the best easily, and what a year this year has been for that. speed metal can be pretty alright. hard metal is fine / pretty obvious. there's stuff in there that plays on the radio. and nu metal was ... fine? and is back? korn, limp bizkit, slipknot, (disturbed?), all released albums this year.

and then you get into death metal, thrash metal, black metal, and just ... eh. eh... this is what people consider real metal, though. power metal is disparaged as disney metal

Something that could be called "real" metal but is still melodic and accessible to my ears... and that drumming!

This is me with the Kanye West thread. Like, I can see how this is competent but I do not dig the genre.
