Re: snob music thread
I think the best way to learn a new song is not to worry about tempo whatsoever for a good while

Re: snob music thread
Mostly true, but it's possible to learn bad habits while playing slow that don't scale. I've run into this a few times. For example, you want to make sure whatever fingering you're using works at speed or you can get some bad muscle memory.
Re: snob music thread
Oh interesting
That didn't occur to me, because I'm not really a piano person, I've only messed with it a little

It means make that note the natural instead of the sharp that the key signature otherwise calls for

Re: snob music thread
Yeah, that. It's G major so you would play F# by default there, the natural symbol forces it to be natural.
Re: snob music thread
Ah also, the natural symbol affects all Fs until the end of the measure, then it switches back to the default F#.
Re: snob music thread
thanks
(i was wondering if maybe it had something to do with the tempo, but if it's the pitch then i can ignore it because the tab (not pictured in the screenshot) already tells me exactly what i need to play)

Re: snob music thread
Okay if you're of a certain age you probably remember the Sesame Street pinball song. What you probably didn't realize is how ridiculously complex it is rhythmically. Mind blown.

Re: snob music thread
played a lot of banjo yesterday and was having a lot of trouble, especially with the index/middle finger picks
played today and it was a lot easier
i think it's because yesterday it was cold and today it was less cold and also i played after coming out of the shower
it's obvious that it might be difficult to play well when my hands are cold. less obvious is that it's also easier to play after i've come out of the shower because my fingers are literally bigger (and so the finger picks fit much more snugly)
i wonder if there is a way to replicate the effect without showering first. maybe if i hold my hands in front a space heater for 2-3 minutes?

Re: snob music thread
i think it actually gets p cold where you are, so if like literally making your hands larger with fabric doesnt work, maybe you need to feel the thing, i guess you could go buy some hand warmers and just toss that back and forth between your hands before you play, but i dunno that hot hands is like a thing. if it works, tohughCrunchums wrote:definitely not while playing

you generally want to avoid wet skin making your skin wet and you absolute one thousand percent do not want to touch a guitar with wet hands

Re: snob music thread
I've been listening to the Cars a lot lately. Not a very deep band, but still underrated. Hit after hit after hit
I made a playlist of their first five albums
The Cars -- Nostalgia for me
Candy-O -- Same
Panorama -- Now this is an unusual album. This album is the most where it feels like they're channeling Devo. There's a lot of avant-garde stuff going on
Shake It Up -- Kind of, veteran hitmakers at this point. Dream Away is pretty amazing
Heartbeat City -- Just monster single after monster single here

Re: snob music thread
when i first started consistently listening to music as a teenager i mostly listened to a classic rock radio station, so maybe that makes sense? though they did say it was classic rock from the 60s 70s and 80s, so shrug. but probably there was still a bias away from the edges of that range

That opening synthesizer sequence is still one of the coolest song intros ever.
