For what it's worth I did not practice this. But then Rylinks says he can sight read choral music and that seems like sorcery to me so there's probably a wide range of talent on this.

Like, I can tune a guitar by ear, I know what an E sounds like. But then if you ask me to just bust out a G flat, I have to think about it, I can't just sing it instantly

I should probably practice this

I thought perfect pitch was, you can hear a note with no context and say "that's a B flat".

Oh I misunderstood

You may have perfect pitch and not realize it -- that happens a lot, actually. Like, you -could- always know what C sounds like, maybe, if you worked at it

I would know a B flat if I heard it. You tune a flute to that note, actually. But there are certain notes that take me a second, I'm saying

As an experiment just now I sang in my head the first chord of Moonlight Sonata (C# minor) and then went over to the keyboard and played it and I fuckin nailed it to the cent even though I haven't heard it since yesterday. But there has to be some explanation other than perfect pitch because I'm not that good.

No, that's it. -You- can tell when a song is in a different key. This is the essence of perfect pitch

The naming the note part is the part you have to work at

You understand, some people can -never- do that. If you play a song in a different key, they can tell that you're playing it correctly but cannot tell that you're playing it in a different key. They don't have perfect pitch. They have pitch, though -- they're not tone deaf

I think most people fall into this category

Wait aren't the first three notes of Moonlight A flat - C # - E

Is that a C# minor chord, lol, that part I have no idea

EDIT: I had to look it up, yeah, that's it. Dude you totally have perfect pitch

Plenty of people can do that. Perfect pitch is being able to start in a key with zero context. No starting pitch or tonic as Rylinks put it.

Not as many as you think. I'm not saying that's the definition of perfect pitch, but I'm saying that that's the essence of it. If I change the key, you know that I did immediately

Ooh, let me put it another way

If I sang M-E-T-H-O-D-O-F-L-O-V-E, you would know whether I were singing the beginning of the song before the key change, or the end of the song after the key change, lol

Yeah that was my perfect pitch test but like I said I'm suspicious. I tried the same trick with K. 545 (which is helpfully in C) before work and I was not close so my working theory is that I've been playing Moonlight so much that it is in some sense temporarily burned into my brain.

That's still useful though because if you have perfect pitch for one song you can still use intervals to get to whatever you want (half step down from C# gives you C, and you can easily get to anything from there). I still wouldn't, like, trust it though.

Yeah that's why perfect pitch is so insane. It's essentially hearing a tone and saying, "ah, easy, that's 440 Hz." It's ridiculously impressive to me that anybody can do that.

This is surprising to me. Are you sure? I have no special musical talent and I can sing the star wars theme starting with any note.

Maybe you just think you can't? Try it with the Imperial March, just hit a random note three times (for the three identical starting notes) and then continue. I think most people can do that?

if I hit a random note three times then I can do Imperial March in my head sometimes (usually when i can't do it it's a high note), i think at least 3/5 with random notes

I wonder how trainable this is. It's really weird how much natural variation there seems to be between people. I can't think of any other skill that has that degree of starting variance.

Well you can hone the perfect pitch ability but if you don't have the ability then you can't gain it

Recognizing intervals on the other hand, you should be able to train yourself to be better at it as long as you're not tone deaf
