I really like how in this video the blue bars aren't the written notes but instead show how long the pianist actually holds each key

it's not just long blue bar for half note, exactly half that length for quarter note, exactly half for eighth note--it shows how the pianist is actually playing the piece

I think motif is usually used for something that goes away and recurs later, not sure it applies here.

Nah that part doesn't matter. The archetype motif is the four-note motif of Beethoven's Fifth, for example

The fact that this song is 13 years old actually makes me want to shrivel up into a corn cob and die of old age.

that's actually the latest wild theory in physics, that the universe is a giant corn cob and we're all shriveling up into it and dying of old age

Space Jazz playlist for playing the space adventure game

Tank! - Seatbelts (the theme from Cowboy Bebop)
I'm Gonna Live Till I Die - Sarah Vaughan
Charade - Bobby Darin
Come Fly With Me - Frank Sinatra
Love for Sale - Buddy Rich
Leap Frog - Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Thelonius Monk
Blade Runner Blues - Vangelis (this is a palate cleanser, totally different tempo than previous. That's going to happen a lot and I'm not going to keep calling it out)
So What - Miles Davis
Bessie's Blues - John Coltrane
Whiplash - Hank Levy
Take Five - Dave Brubeck
Caravan - John Wasson
Mexicali Nose - Buddy Rich
The Drum Thing - John Coltrane
Daahoud - Clifford Brown and Max Roach
I Put a Spell on You - Nina Simone
Voodoo Dreams - Lex Baxter
Broadway - The Clash (questionable as to whether this is jazz at all but I'm going for it anyway)
Taxi Driver - Bernard Herrman
Chinatown - Jerry Goldsmith
Cubana Chant - Harry James (note that Buddy Rich was his drummer at this time)
Pegasus - Stan Kenton
Sabotage - Jared Schonig
Jump, Jive an Wail - Louis Prima
So Danco Samba - Wanda De Sah
Moon River - Andy Williams
As Long as I'm Singing - Wayne Newton
What a Little Moonlight Can Do - Nancy Wilson
Malambo No. 1 - Yma Sumac
Things Are Swingin - Peter Brady
All or Nothing at All - Stan Kenton and Ann Richards
I Got Rhythm - Sarah Vaughan
You Are My Sunshine - Nat King Cole
Rush - Seatbelts
Bad Dog No Biscuits - Seatbelts
Puttin on the Ritz - Terry Snyder (an amazingly uptempo, hard jazz version of an otherwise wretched song)
It Had Better Be Tonight - Lena Horne
Piano Black - Seatbelts
Channel 1 Suite - Buddy Rich
Love Music - Bernard Herrman (the theme from Vertigo)
Memories of Green - Vangelis
Nuttville - Buddy Rich
Time Check - Buddy Rich
Magic Flea - Count Basie
Big Dipper - Mel Lewis and Thad Jones
Don't Blink - Gordon Goodwin
Lester Leaps in - Bill Watrous and Pete Christlieb
Taki Rari - Yma Sumac
Calcutta - Les Baxter

new Gorillaz album is good. i've only listened to it all the way through once, but it's probably their third or fourth best album? (1 is demon days 2 is their self titled album and then this competes with plastic beach)

I let Apple Music make a "Yes Essentials" playlist, basically its own best-of Yes album

It put "Love Will Find a Way" on the playlist, a song I literally haven't heard in decades

Hahaha holy shit this sounds like the band Asia or something

Oh yeah I forgot to post about this the other day, but I was trying to figure out how to play the main lyric of Yours Is No Disgrace on a flute I have laying here, just to know what notes it is

During the chorus, he sings constrained to just five different notes (and their octaves)

The five notes correspond to a major pentatonic scale. This is why the song sounds so unearthly and yet familiar

ON-A-SAIL-ING-SHIP-TO-NO-WHERE, LEAV-ING-ANY-PLACE
Fsharp-E-D-E-Fsharp-E-D-B, Fsharp-E-D-B-E
A is the implied missing note (which is hit in other parts)
Dmaj pentatonic, 1-2-3-5-6
It's your turn in Cthulhu Wars
It's your turn in Squirrel Wars
It's your turn in Demon Wars
It's your turn in Wall Street Wars
