Yuusha Goikkou no Kaerimichi (The Hero's Party on Their Way Home) is a pretty good single-chapter manga! Worth checking out I think, it's like a 10-minute read.

Re: Shiny New Anime Thread
im still learning to read japanese: currently i'm halfway done with wanikani, and then once i finish learning the alphabet i'll move on to the grammar
Re: Shiny New Anime Thread
i liked wanikani better than duolingo, but you could do both, fuck it. but then all of the stuff i see says both is terrible. gamifying it sure makes doing it easier, though. or more engaging?Rylinks wrote:im still learning to read japanese: currently i'm halfway done with duolingo, and then once i finish learning the alphabet i'll move on to the grammar

i typed the wrong word and i actually am halfway done with wanikani
Re: Shiny New Anime Thread
I'm not very good at it, but yes. I make up my shortcomings with diligence, I look up phrases and things I suspect might be puns etc. I would not dare translate from English to Japanese, but I think I can do Japanese to English at a decent level.
I haven't actually seen the raw, which I'd need for a proper critique. But the translator hit enough of the more obvious Japanese-English translation pitfalls and context fails that I can still point out a bunch. Here's some examples:edit - what was annoying?
Page 17: "I healed a small wound along the way." I'm guessing "along the way" was 途中 in the original, which does literally mean "en route", but it's also used in a more abstract sense: "while in the middle of (doing something)". Which is obviously what Priestess meant here! "While I was at it, I also healed some of your minor wounds."
Page 18: "Whenever I see an exhausted person rotting along the way". The word choice here is obviously super weird, and the translator almost certainly got lost with something like 尽きた, which does mean exhausted, but is used for terminal exhaustion, being worn out, reaching the end of the line. "Whenever I see a dead body rotting along the roadside".
Page 37: "If only I was stronger, then you wouldn't have died. Yet if I was any weaker, and without thinking, chose to avenge you..." This makes no sense, and I'm willing to bet that it was "or" and not "and", or probably there was no conjunction at all (Japanese does that a lot), and the translator flubbed it. Probably a more correct translation (although again, I'd have to see the raw): "If only I was stronger, then you wouldn't have died. Yet if I was any weaker... or if I had recklessly tried to avenge you..." (then she would have joined them in death.)
There are many other examples where the English is off by enough that it's almost certainly a translation issue, and even more phrasing problems that aren't necessarily due to not understanding Japanese, and more just not being talented enough at composing English sentences. If I had the raw and some time, I think I could do a decent job.

Also you should definitely be learning grammar now, there are some diminishing returns with wanikani in that most of the common kanji are learned in the first 20-30 levels. Which is not to say you shouldn't keep going with it, but learning grammar would let you make some much faster gains in understanding Japanese right now.
