Re: It's Videogames
even games without as much character-based skill depth had the like, de_dust2 or 2fort phenomenon where most people just want to play the same map forever
mobas have a whole lot more you need to learn on top of that, both mastering your own heroes but also understanding teammates and opponents
maps are cool if they change stuff you've already mastered and give you a new thing to master, but probably not cool if you're still trying to master the things that attract you to the game

Re: It's Videogames
did it launch that way? i'm curious if it's like "oh yeah learning maps is part of the game" rather than a variation on the game

I came to hots way late in its development cycle and have no idea. It was already packed to the gills with the things when i got on the scene

A look through a wiki suggests that hots shipped with four different maps, Blackheart's Bay, Cursed Hollow, Dragon Shire and Haunted Mines

Re: It's Videogames
haunted mines is two-lane with the underworld and blackheart's bay is big and expansive with the coinhunt stuff, so it's a reasonable amount of map diversity from the get-go

Re: It's Videogames
yeah you cant pick in any of the matchmade queues, only in custom games with your friends i think
Re: It's Videogames
The underworld was a pretty cool mechanic although I doubt it'd be a good mechanic for something like LoL as it'd probably just slow the games down even more due to people not being able to find each other. But it'd be a great way to gank.

i loved twisted treeline to death, particularly with pre-rework ap sionBlissful wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 2:31 pm i remember having a real good time with 3v3 back in the day
i think the small team size made it easier to get a team filled with my trusted friends but without either pubs or the people in my group who'd end up causing matches to devolve into yelling at each other
nobody could handle it for some reason
Re: It's Videogames
Doug, am I tripping or is there no way to get this to count as a delivery (big pipe on the loading platform).
Re: It's Videogames
Some deliveries, the item must be secured on a truck or trailer to count
The good news is that if you've brought the big pipe all the way here, you can bring an empty trailer, put it on that trailer, and "deliver it"

That is not exactly good news. I don't think I found a 4 slot in Alaska yet.
Re: It's Videogames
I could buy one, but buying trailers is for suckers.

Regarding the announcing, it's definitely quite a bit more "calling out what is happening on the screen" compared to the games from The International* I watched. They do call out ability usage though, and often after a fight or during the reply of it there'll be a little digging into it. Honestly some of the casters feel like they substitute shouting/hype for content in big moments so I wouldn't say there's no variation in tone. Depends who you got in the game you checked out I guess.haplo wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 4:24 am I watched a match of the LoL finals and I cannot believe how boring it is. It was a 30 minute game with around 15 kills, and any time they fought the announcer's commentary was like "PlayerX jumps in, now he jumps out. They're attacking PlayerY. Now they're attacking PlayerZ." Zero indication of whether anything good or bad is happening, what abilities people are using, whether ults are being used, announcer's voice permanently stuck in "I watched a youtube video on how announcers are supposed to sound" with no variation in tone as the battle progresses. Also a bunch of stupid ads all over the stream.
Maybe I just picked a bad time to hop in.
Most importantly, the game just is a whole lot slower and more boring than DotA though.
* Meanwhile, the announcing in the games of The International that I watched, there was an ungodly echo to everything they said which persisted through to the VODs, and multiple players admitted they could hear the announcers and would know things like when a team is going Rosh, so...
