Re: It's Videogames
Another video from the design guy that I thought was particularly cool. I haven't played the new SamSho yet, but the video manages to put into words what I liked about the style and ethos of the original ones (and why I find Mortal Kombat uninteresting.)

did someone say video essay
Re: It's Videogames
I enjoyed that. I had to follow it up with a playthrough of the original Neo Geo game using Charlotte, & am still left with a strong desire to rewatch all the Toshiro Mifune Is A Samurai films @__@

Bring on the kung-fu amputees - no arms vs. no legs anyone? A bit of high-speed underground ninja-tunneling is always good as well. I wanna see some shit like that. Crazy monks with gnarly special powers can make any film good. FACT.

it does look more dynamic
Re: It's Videogames
I sure love discovering things about new games with people on the Internet as we play them together! Oh wait, you can't anymore because multiple full playthroughs are streamed on Twitch days before the public gets to play them, and all conversation turns from speculation and advice to blatant spoilers. Thanks for the key! #ad

Yuh. When my 13-then-12 started playing Breath of the Wild he declared he was avoiding the internet until he'd satiated himself, having the idea that he'd have gotten more OMG hours out of Hollow Knight (which he can now Steel Soul speedrun @_@) if he hadn't turned so quickly to spoilers.haplo wrote:I sure love discovering things about new games with people on the Internet as we play them together! If you ever find yourself in danger of respecting my opinions on videogames, keep in mind that of the two games I finished this week, I enjoyed Paper Mario and thought Journey was the biggest snooze ever.

what didn't you like about Journey? it's been a while since i played it. i don't think there was much in gameplay, and it's really short, and i think the mountain part soured me for some reason. maybe it got kind of hokey there

it was cool to meet people in the desert though, and you'd dance around and do little musical notes

Re: It's Videogames
Are there still players to play with for Journey? The interest in that game was definitely about getting paired with another person and kinda bonding with them
without any communication tools
There were probably other things to it but that was what interested me in trying it and what I remember about it

I can see just not caring for the gimmick too

Re: It's Videogames
I didn't like...anything, really. I never felt at all engaged with it. There was no sense of discovery, because if I tried going the wrong way, the camera would wrench itself around to point at where I was supposed to be heading. I tried going toward something that I thought was interesting a couple of times, and the game would just NOPE and now I'm pointed back the right way. There were a bunch of times where there would be a cutscene (not an interesting one; just a little animation sort of showing what I'd just done), then I'd get to control the character for twenty seconds, then it would take over again to move me to the next region, and that always takes me completely out of things. There were a couple of scenes where the character is sliding down a hill, and I just put down the controller. I didn't feel like I was doing anything, and the game slid me around rocks and stuff to get to the next area anyway. I felt like I was 5% above just watching a YouTube video for most of it.Still Alive wrote:what didn't you like about Journey? it's been a while since i played it. i don't think there was much in gameplay, and it's really short, and i think the mountain part soured me for some reason. maybe it got kind of hokey there
I ran into a couple of people, but I didn't know until the game was over that they were actual players. One of them ran ahead of me and unlocked something before I could get to it, which I did not enjoy. It felt like either the game providing a hand-holding NPC to show me what to do (which felt superfluous) or an experienced player shoving me out of the way to show me what to do (which I also don't like). There were no times when it felt like I was communicating with another person, which I guess is what you're supposed to do with the circle button. I didn't know until I went on the internet that that button is shouting, and that it changes lengths or tones or something. It never occurred to me to use that as a communication tool, although I did refill someone's scarf...things...a couple of times. I didn't feel camaraderie or anything, though. I was just tapping a button because we were sort of close to each other.Still Alive wrote:it was cool to meet people in the desert though, and you'd dance around and do little musical notes
From my perspective, I was playing an uninteresting single-player game, and sometimes there was another character on screen that I wanted to go away. I don't even think they were real people, since it seems pretty unlikely that there were like eight people playing at the exact points in the game I was, at the same time, on a Monday afternoon eight years after the game came out, and five years after it came to PS4.
I did like the way NieR: Automata brought up other players, so I'm not 100% opposed to that sort of gimmick. But Journey just did nothing at all for me.

Also I never thought I was "paired" with anyone. There'd be someone there, and either they'd get out of sight or I would. Reading stuff online, I learn that people would post on a message board stuff like "Sorry I abandoned you" but...man, I did not have that emotional response.
