this is all from memory so it could be totally wrong but

1. if you enter a room, all the exits in that room will be highlighted on your map
2. all the doors are bright illuminated hexagons that are easy to see
3. vertical movement is easy and gets easier as the game goes on to make vertical exploration easier, but for the most part the layouts are on a plane

I can understand why people like it (just like Ori) but it's missing all the elements of the genre I really like. I was just surprised because this is the first Metroid game I ever played I thought it would be... nearly identical to Castlevania in a sense, since its name is in the genre name. They're incredibly different though if you look past the surface of "walk between rooms and get items to progress".

Metroid Prime 3 is the only one I played. I remember it was good and required backtracking, but I don't remember enough details to comment on whether Haplo's complaint would apply.

The best Metroidvania might actually be Hollow Knight. If you haven't played that yet, you are fucking up.

My one beef with Hollow Knight is there are 2 or 3 very hard challenges in the game that have no progression, their only purpose is challenge. They are not marked or anything so you can get seriously sidetracked on something that doesn't matter. I remember complaining about this on goodgamery and got shouted down.

I didn't finish Hollow Knight, I found the fight against the six fat whatevers at once too difficult and moved on to some other game

If you like metroidvania, I recommend Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo.

Also Metroid 2 was CRAZY immersive despite having this really (I'm sure there's a term for this. Raw in a numerical sense) "Metroid Counter" and your goal was to get that number to zero.

Spoiler!

I found the video of the thing Jaffe's article was about. I'll never know because I spoiled myself, but I feel like I would have shot the ceiling there because there's a map cue and there's clearly shit up there. But I guess I see his side a little.

there isnt just a map cue, theres an alien placed at an awkward angle that encourages you to take shots where you could hit the roof by accident

I haven't played this game but fwiw "most people will find it immediately" and "some people will miss it and be extremely frustrated" aren't incompatible and don't necessarily require group 2 to be massive idiots or whatever

now that guy who couldn't beat the cuphead tutorial, he's in a whole class of his own

Being frustrated with a game isn't a sign that there is a problem. A well-designed game will frustrate you in order to encourage you to think about what you might be missing. Frustration is a sign that your approach isn't working. You can respond to this by wailing ineffectually like a tiny baby, or by using lateral thinking to try and figure out what puzzle piece you're missing. Every single one of my favorite games frustrated me at some point, most of them many times.

i don't think a destructible ceiling is a compelling source of frustration but maybe i just don't understand metroid
