there are like ten million korean MMOs that we just never get here, just gotta assume it scratches an itch they've gotthe_zoomies wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 4:21 am Thanks Wump
I think I get the power fantasy aspect, but it's the hyper literal nature that's so confusing to me. Like a shonen about a kid that can cast bolt 3, but only has 20mp, and each issue they get one more MP. It's just odd.
I guess it's not for me or something.

Haha I was gonna say I thought all shonen stuff was basically power fantasy + ~the strength I derive from my friends~ but yeah I see the distinction you're making now.the_zoomies wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 4:21 am Thanks Wump

it's important to have ~systems~
~systems~ and a character / characters interacting with that makes a story interesting

Yeah love those stories where the system is clearly explained, it's important to know how precisely the protagonist is weilding power that nobody ever has before but hasn't quite figured out how to properly tap into it yetShiny Days wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 5:15 am it's important to have ~systems~

Yeah, I think it's that system aspect that's so culturally divergent from the fiction I'm used to.Shiny Days wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 5:15 am it's important to have ~systems~

If I go wildly, WILDLY generic about funny books.
Traditional fiction is the triumph of those chosen by the gods
European fiction is the destined triumph of those chosen by birth (ie: nobility)
American fiction is the random triumph of those chosen by birth (ie: Mutants, Ender Wiggins, Harry Potter (I KNOW))
Japanese fiction is the triumph of hard work + randomness
Korean fiction is the triumph of hard work within the highly specified system
