I recently got into Grappler Baki, a fighting manga. It's almost a guilty pleasure because of how weird and ridiculous and over-the-top it is, but somehow it's just so earnest and has so much heart that I don't care, I love it.

Yeah, you don't easily forget a Junji Ito story. Truly horrific stuff, I can't help but love it.

Junji Ito seems like a comfy and chill guy in interviews

I like that he made that manga about his cats

Wouldn't "manga no thread" mean "manga's thread" :smug:
It's your turn in Cthulhu Wars
It's your turn in Squirrel Wars
It's your turn in Demon Wars
It's your turn in Wall Street Wars

You should read the first 300 issues of hajime no ippo, then pretend it ended.

Points up to where I mention I’ve been reading ippo for 20 years.

I watched the Hajime no Ippo anime and I felt that was enough.

What I really wanna read is Berserk, mostly after watching a Super Eyepatch Wolf video about it.

Other fighting manga I enjoyed was Riki-Oh (over the top, ridiculous, gorey but extremely 80s and with a lot of heart), and All-Rounder Meguru (more a sports manga than a fighting manga, only the sport happens to be mixed martial arts. 99% realistic (far more realistic than Ippo), it's really fascinating! Unfortunately unfinished.

Ippo is the most realistic manga you will ever read

Not because of DAMIYO YOSH get punched in the face until you win. But because George Sensei will die before he finishes. And so much will end up unfinished because he couldn't stop FUCKING AROUND.

I'm a meta-narrative guy, and that meta narrative drives me every day to not fuck around on stupid shit and get my life's work DONE.

Blah blah, KBS, take it to the drunk thread, whatever.

Just as you HAVE to read the first 50 chapters of Death Note if you truly love comics, you NEED to read the first 20 chapters of Major. Throw it in a ditch after, I don't care, but jesus christo, those first 20 chapters are unparalleled.

You miss SO MUCH in the anime for ippo. Like, have you ever read The portrait of Dorian Grey? That's what I would call the quintessential Serial from a negative perspective. A non stop cathartic ROLLER COASTER until they throw on the breaks and griiiiiiind to an unsatisfying conclusion :pmothatswhatshesaid:

Ippo's like that. The first 150 are unreal, the next 300 cover about as much ground and the next 600 do as well. I'm not trying to be fucking flippant, I only hold on out of a remote hope that George-san finishes before he dies.
