i don't read enough to know whether it's a typical example, but it has the tag and i expect it's going to be a romance in the end although i haven't gotten that far

I got into Kengan Ashura! It's a very good fighting manga. If you're into muscle men using increasingly forbidden secret techniques on each other (and I sure am), then boy is this the manga for you!

There's also a creepy stalker dude who murders people for daring to bleed on the MC. He's my favorite.

Have you read cvstvs? It's deep into Roman lore + gladiatorial boxing.

Google has nothing on "cvstvs", is that supposed to be "cestus"?

WUMPY HALP

Why are popular korean managa so weird? They're like hyper-literal RPG power fantasies. Like the most popular one is about beating up low level monsters until max level? And the new hotness is a prince who time traveled and hit level cap?

I'm torn between bafflement and a desire to buy them FFVIII or FFII

videos games are p important to i want to say korean culture, but my knowledge of actual korean culture is somewhat limited so i'll say at least a portion of it, which is why I think a lot of it is framed in a sort of video game type thing. they actually do a pretty good job of making it in a way thats not terrible. re: the power fantasy type stuff i'd probably just point at that being a factor of asian culture across the board, or at least a portion of it. its less prominent in manga but there's def a gigantic chunk of manga that have that just straight up revenge power fantasy stuff. if you read the more female targetted stuff its a bit unnerving too because it feels like a disproportionate amount of it has our protagonist just being treated like human garbage for a higher percentage of the story than i'd like, so something of the inverse of that

re: juree, china stuff baffles me and i think there might be a layer of disconnect between the webnovels and the webtoons because holy shit chinese stuff is p trash almost entirely across the board. i'm reading a bunch of them, but at least 4 of them are actually just the same plotline with the same story beats just with the names changed. they like to do a thing where its like, four chapters of decent looking artwork and then whoops its all reddit meme faces and smooshed stuff done in 2 seconds. i know its prob because they have to churn out chapters at an unreasonable pace but man, i would prefer just a hair of effort. Of all the stuff i read i'd classify all but i think 2 chinese titles as "guilty pleasure" sort of reading because you have to know and accept that its absolute trash before you can salvage any sort of entertainment from it.

speaking of effort, man korean stuff has started to look REALLY solid art-wise of late. Solo Levelling is one of the best looking things being made right now probably

Thanks Wump

I think I get the power fantasy aspect, but it's the hyper literal nature that's so confusing to me. Like a shonen about a kid that can cast bolt 3, but only has 20mp, and each issue they get one more MP. It's just odd.

I guess it's not for me or something.
