You know, mutants and everybody being scared of them never made any sense, right, given the rest of the Marvel canon

*Ice Man goes by* omg run it's one of those dangerous mutants, Ice Man, look how he doesn't fit in and we fear him because he's a mutant

*Human Torch goes by* whoo hoo Human Torch! Fantastic Four! The great heroes from New York, can I get a selfie

Wasn't that actually a thing in X-Men? Like there was even prejudice inside the academy because some people looked like monsters and some people could totally pass as humans. But then, real hard life you got there Beast while my eyes are constantly transporting punch beams from the punch dimension

At its best, capeshit is stories set in a world for children that adults can enjoy.

I don't know what tailpipe Marvel and DC have been huffing, but it creeps me out.

Yes, that's internally inconsistent, but it's also that one book is teaching lessons about being different. To pivot your Hulk/Cyclops example, no shit #eyepunch needs to learn impulse control and his anger can be incredibly dangerous. But the story isn't about that.

I don't understand your stance, but it's easy to parse, which is nice

man, days of future past was just the worst fucking movie. yes, great, the president no longer fears mutants now that a mutant who can perfectly imitate his form and voice, of the president, defended him, choose not to shoot him, from the guy that dropped a stadium on top of him, tried to murder him with mind controlled sentinels, and then ripped out the several ton weighing bunker that was buried tens of feet underground out of the ground. sentinel program cancelled. peace between mutants and humans!

Dredging this up to ask if you or anyone else is reading the X-Men reboot? I’m enjoying it.

They’ve essentially made Moira MacTaggert the key piece to the X-Men. She has been retconned into being a mutant, but one that when she dies she relives her whole life with all knowledge gained. She in on life 11 or something now and has tried a bunch of different things to fix the humans v mutants situation (all prior eras of mutants were one of her lives), but she’s discovered they always lose. So, she convinced Xavier to do something radical: start a mutant nation and go full on in a different direction than before. Now mutants exert their superiority in a bunch of different ways. That’s the not very well composed synopsis anyway.

Not sure on the last part, I’ve only been following the reboot. But Cyclops and Xavier seem fine to each other, and Xavier is def in charge.

But yeah, they didn’t wipe anything, just put it all in past lives or earlier in her current life. It’s actually well done enough that the rectonning isn’t too unwieldy.

House of X and Powers of X were good reads even if they were mostly just set-up.

This is a safe space for dumb questions, right?

What the fuck was marvel thinking with that awful "Tracing" art style? I get that in some way, everyone will copy an organization's biggest star, but that star was apparently Greg Land? It's baffling.

I'm talking about the uncanny valley where everyone was traced from a celebrity, but if you didn't know the celebrity it was really confusing.

I went looking for examples, but found this excellent thing instead

it's interesting how drawn characters that are a facsimile of real people are immediately recognisably distinct from characters created whole cloth

Greg Land is a terrible artist who some people somewhat conclusively proved had been using porn for reference and tracing art. I say somewhat conclusively because the guy is still working for Marvel and is still gets a lot of gigs and is still making a really good living tracing art and using porn for reference.

There's a strong argument to be made (and people more eloquent than I have) that Greg Land's porn tracing makes it impossible to create a compelling narrative with female characters, given that the ONLY emotion they can portray is "ecstasy".
