Here's my attempt, for the record:

Momo:
Oh right, I remember your fried wieners were pretty good!
Cooking is the one thing you can do, huh?

Shamiko:
What do you mean, the "one thing"?!

Btw, while not close to the worst thing in that translation, it also has a common pet peeve of mine where names (used in lieu of "you") are preserved in a Japanese-English translation when they shouldn't be.

While Japanese does have a word for "you" (anata), it is actually considered rude in many contexts! It's much more polite to use the person's name. So you get sentences like this one, where Momo talks to Shamiko and uses Shamiko's name like she was talking about her in the third person to someone else. It sounds weird and unnatural in English! Just use "you"!

every competent translator is one of them

fan translators become one of them when they get skilled enough and they're no longer just prettifying Google Translate results

the only way to not become one of them is to be very careful not to accidentally learn the language

well good news, it's very easy to do so you have a lot of them! and many of them don't know either Japanese or English, so there's nothing to get in the way of the broken translations you like!

many have tried

but the correct translation seeks to be communicated

once the path of knowledge is open, you too shall become its conduit

Japanese Ammo with Misa is a fun Japanese channel for beginners, I recommend giving it a look! It's not as effective as actually sitting down and learning vocab or grammar, but it's a lot less effort! She explains stuff really well, with a lot of examples.

I opened a random video and clicked to a random timecode and it was actually a very interesting, extended discussion about だ. I always thought dropping it was more of a feminine marker and sometimes try to force myself to use it because I thought not doing so was girly. However she says its inclusion for simple sentences where it apparently doesn't belong is more like evil anime character marker, heh.
