translation complaints containment thread
He is pulling to bits with very clumsy fingers a web that he has only made a slight attempt to understand

Re: translation complaints containment thread
it's crazy it's like a majority crowd doing stupid shit bringing things down and destroying things through the power of being a lot of people. mmm
Re: translation complaints containment thread
Actually I suppose that's true in this case, people will generally search nyaa by name and after that there won't be too many results to drown yours out. I guess I was thinking more about like, writing an amazing book and everyone's just reading 50 Shades instead.

i liked being in the era when a thing you could be excited about was the combination of a good fansub group picking up a good show
Re: translation complaints containment thread
i watched the cyberpunk anime on netflix. it was interesting
one thing i noticed is that the japanese kept on not matching the subtitles. which wouldn't be distracting except that it was usually for things like names or english words - stuff that i understood.
i wonder if it was "translated" as much as it was developed in multiple languages simultaneously

Re: translation complaints containment thread
I saw Pagliacci live at the Met with subtitles and they translated the titular line from the aria "a ventitre ore" as "at sunset." It literally means "at hour 23" so I was kind of miffed because 23:00 is not sunset, you... clowns.
But it turns out Canio was using an obscure Italian rural timekeeping system where hour 23 meant an hour before sunset so actually I was owned.

The Arabs did a thing like that too, for a long time, except theirs was based on sunrise instead of sunsetpterrus wrote: ↑Wed Oct 19, 2022 3:27 pm I saw Pagliacci live at the Met with subtitles and they translated the titular line from the aria "a ventitre ore" as "at sunset." man goes to doctor, says, doctor, I'm feeling really owned. world has conspired to humiliate me in my hour of greatest confidence. doctor says, treatment is simple. go to mtg robot message boards. poster there does not even know what hour 23 is. laughing at him will bring you comfort

Re: translation complaints containment thread
granted the literal thing of honorifics doesn't apply in many other languages, but theres any number of quirks of language capable of causing a similar disjoint in subtitle-reading viewers as ashe described

english speaker’s knowledge of japanese and romance languages is very different even if they’ve never studied either. it’s not just a particular detail like honorifics

If anything the intersection of english and romance languages gives a wider space of possible ways for subtitle-readers to be bewildered by dissonant audioRylinks wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:12 pmenglish speaker’s knowledge of japanese and romance languages is very different even if they’ve never studied either. it’s not just a particular detail like honorifics

currently working on a technical manual that was machine-translated from Chinese to English, and now I get to try and translate it into Hungarian
it's very good, there are terms like "Bear humidifier". I don't know how I'm going to translate bear humidifier, but I am fascinated by the concept
