zahir's buddies are there because they're family and they love each other, which is one of the best and most enjoyable to watch motivations aroundCrunchums wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 8:46 pmI can accept Zahir's buddies not having enough motivation. i mean their motivation is that that's who they roll with / i guess they're mad at the world for being imprisoned (he busts them out, iirc?) / the romantic relationship with sparky sparky boom boom girl. there's not a lot of characterization for those 3 in general.Blissful wrote:i wish the s3 villains had had any reason for doing any of the stuff they did, because that would have upped things from 'really good' to 'insanely good'

this is a neat take on it, i kinda dig itCrunchums wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 8:46 pmbut I think part of what makes Zahir such a great villain for me is that he's absolutely doing what he does because of his idealism. and his ideals are obviously dumb and bad and lead to bad outcomes, but come on, you're gonna tell me that that's implausible? how many unironic Marxists do you see these days?
i guess my problem is that it just felt hard to buy that he'd actually believe some of the stuff he was saying

so it's uh expanded universe?

Re: a:tla / korra
the presentation of the S3 villains, zahir included was immaculate though, they were just a joy to watch every time they were onscreen
Re: a:tla / korra
which was the season with the phonecall scene? that was fun

if you want some good queer representation in kids shows though you gotta watch KIPO
though tbh you should watch KIPO anyway it's a total blast

agree! also the music, like oh my god https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFF26LlHFVU (that's a loop of 23 second thing, i wish it was part of an entire song instead)
i can respect that opinion. personally i can't stand some of the decisions they made, specifically "oh actually bending metal and lightning isn't hard at all" - ugh, awful. Mako just clocking in at his day job fueling a power station with lightning like it's nothingand (incredibly subjectively) I think the setting is way more interesting too.
;_;it's literally impossible to listen to Mako singing *Leaves on the Vine* without crying
<3
and then afterwards they hit you with "in memory of Iroh's voice actor" too

Re: a:tla / korra
korra definitely has better villains! imo Azula is atla's best villain, and if you're ranking villains from both shows i think i'd have her third after Zahir and Amon
the thing about Amon is that he completely has a point. too bad they very much did not stick the landing there

Re: a:tla / korra
iirc one of the showmakers answered a question on twitter about the end of s4, and they said that it was korra and asami starting a romantic relationship

when he airbend-asphyxiated the earth queen person it was like oh shit
also when they're meeting in the spirit world or w/e and then he's able to speak to his homies in the real world and take advantage of the situation
he's not fucking around

Re: a:tla / korra
i knew that korra and asami were a thing going into the show, but i knew it like third hand from reading shitposts on /co/ when the show was airing and had no other sources on the matter so i was expecting it to be a thing that happened onscreen and not like, just a bunch of subtext
some of the subtext is pretty cute if you're primed to be looking for it like i was, but i dont know that i'd have picked up on any/much of it without extracanonical knowledge
Re: a:tla / korra
i don't remember this villian at or that scene at all
Re: a:tla / korra
i just remember the part where she's writing to asami in season 4 and she's like i only feel comfortable talking with you and not mako or bo lin and i was like i feel like the only reason you put in that dialogue is if it's a love interest thing, and they heyBlissful wrote:i knew that korra and asami were a thing going into the show, but i knew it like third hand from reading shitposts on /co/ when the show was airing and had no other sources on the matter so i was expecting it to be a thing that happened onscreen and not like, just a bunch of subtext

Re: a:tla / korra
i dont remember it that well
i remember a bunch of stuff to do with varrick happened in it
him & ju-li are a good couple :3 i liked her 'betrayal'
the giant mech felt kind of emblematic of the parts of korra that are silly, but the control scheme was cute at least
uhh, some other stuff happened probably? i dont remember

Re: a:tla / korra
I found kuvira's arc very disappointing. they have all these beats that work if she's, like, metal napoleon but the writers didn't have any self-control so they made her metal hitler instead
also the attempt to redeem the annoying earth prince was [giant jacking off motion] (I did like the bit about bolin's grandmother being a fanatical monarchist though). and doing a whole thing about the secret weapon and then being like "lol actually there was an entirely different, more important, secret weapon that never got mentioned" felt hacky

"stalin" approximately means "steel man" so that checks out
