We binged the rest of the run, what a ride. I have convinced the children that's all there is, Korra can wait.

Yeah it was. All the things I wanted to happen, did, with just enough arm twisting to make me earn it, & a few bonuses tossed in (like the drumming for the Fire Masters being the intro drumming, & so many good lines). I feel like it showed my kids what an amazing show is capable of too. Way to raise the bar, Aang.

Bring on the kung-fu amputees - no arms vs. no legs anyone? A bit of high-speed underground ninja-tunneling is always good as well. I wanna see some shit like that. Crazy monks with gnarly special powers can make any film good. FACT.

Crunchums, did you have some kind of viewing order for the anime Avatar: Legend of Korra?

season 2 is a dumpster fire to the point that i would recommend skipping it except for two flashback episodes: "Chapter Seven: Beginnings, Part 1" and "Chapter Eight: Beginnings, Part 2"
season 1 was good apart from [the one big flaw], but if you want to watch only the best stuff then you could just watch season 3 (and the aforementioned two-parter)
also this thread exists
https://mtglitch.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=87 (and western animation != anime) but maybe you don't want spoilers

well
season 1 is pretty decent. the finale is disappointing, but in their defense they thought one season was all they were going to get to make
season 2 is a train wreck. but it has two flashback episodes that are great and leave you wanting more
season 3 is really really good
season 4 is disappointing
so like, i dunno? i would sooner recommend watching 1 and the flashback episodes in 2 and 3 than not watching anything at all. i dunno how weird you would feel watching 3 and they're like hey remember when this thing happened and you're like no because it happened in 2. but like 3 is so good and 2 is so bad
we went for your watch order and just watched those flashback eps in s2
holy shit those flashback eps own, ty for the heads up

are the flashback episodes the ones with the first avatar? those were good
also i feel like the rest of season 2 includes important plot for the protagonist of the show (Varrick) so i dont know if its worth skipping

varrick is win but i backfilled the season 2 episodes before finishing season 4 and i feel like a bunch of his best stuff is in the later seasons rather than in the long lingering subplot about him war profiteering

i wish the s3 villains had had any reason for doing any of the stuff they did, because that would have upped things from 'really good' to 'insanely good'

I can accept Zahir's buddies not having enough motivation. i mean their motivation is that that's who they roll with / i guess they're mad at the world for being imprisoned (he busts them out, iirc?) / the romantic relationship with sparky sparky boom boom girl. there's not a lot of characterization for those 3 in general.
but I think part of what makes Zahir such a great villain for me is that he's absolutely doing what he does because of his idealism. and his ideals are obviously dumb and bad and lead to bad outcomes, but come on, you're gonna tell me that that's implausible? how many unironic Marxists do you see these days?

korra has better animation and action than ATLA and (incredibly subjectively) I think the setting is way more interesting too.
ATLA though has a much better set of core characters and far stronger emotional core. korra doesn't have the strongest emotions whereas it's literally impossible to listen to Mako singing *Leaves on the Vine* without crying
there's also a difference in narrative style; the "Destroy Ganon" style plot of ATLA gives a strong multi season arc and goal but I personally prefer more self contained stories, like how Korra's four seasons are thematically linked and tie into overall plot about the world changing but are still narratively distinct
also korra has canonically gay women so that's nice
