just in case people still want to talk about the game weve already all put over a hundred hours into

slay the spire
i feel like this game deserves its own thread, particularly since when we talk about it we tend to get a little deeper and it seems sort of uncouth with the gist of the general video game thread.
ive been playing a lot of watcher recently. im up to ascension 8 or 9 now. im curious what cards and strategies people are digging.
im finding my best decks tend to be all about setting up big turns. the goal is to end turn in calm (if they are loading an attack)-> rage first thing next turn -> unload attacks (ideally a bunch of the 1 mana 12 damage retain ones)-> 0 cost calm card. in that vein, the cards im trying to chase the most and which i find most impactful are (in the order im finding them on the wiki):
tantrum is probably the second best rage setter from my experience, and a great card you dont mind drawing when you are already in rage. it plays well with strength trinkets. its cheap. it does 18 damage in rage pre-upgrade and 24 post. i generally want as many of these as possible.
ragnarok is the card you want on your top end. if you save your miracle you can always activate rage then use it for a ton of damage, or if youre in rage you can usually drop a calm after using it. just a really good card at pretty much every stage of the game.
probably my favorite card to grab with watcher. its exactly what you want. it lets you move a mana over to next turn and start with rage. you get 2(3) more cards, and probably 2 more mana from breaking calm, to start your turn. youre almost always going to get a turn of 5+ mana, with double damage, with enough attack cards in your hand that you can convert all your mana into double damage.
there are probably a lot more i could put down here. watcher has some really strong cards. whats working for everyone else?

Re: slay the spire
i only just started playing her yesterday, and got through half a run before i had to stop. i'll probably have opinions once i make it to asc 5 or so
Re: slay the spire
some cards i want to like, but which dissapointed me:
i REALLY like the retain mechanic. runic pyramid (unfortunately a nonbo) is my favorite boss trinket. i thought this thing would be great. thin your deck a bit. wait a few turns. drop an undercosted attack spell. its not terrible, but it just feels like there are a lot better option in the class. it builds up too slow and always costs 2 mana. ill still take it sometimes, but its way more niche and deck specific than i hoped.
i love cards like this. with the old ironclad, i was a huge fan of the exhaust deck, and ideally it had multiples of the card that gave you block every time you exhausted. changing stances just doesnt seem to happen often enough. whether you want to change a stance or now is also heavily dictated by what your opponent is doing in a given round. its just not consistent enough. its almost impossible to get multiple activations off of it in a single round and end where you want (at least in ym experience). like the above, its not awful, and you definitel want 1 or 2 in some decks. its just not a strong build around card like i hoped.

Re: slay the spire
I think I'm going to kill AC Origins before I start Watcher, but I'm looking forward to slaying more spires.
Re: slay the spire
wait, can you stack wrath and divinity? i just figured that if you went to a different stance then you lost divinity's 3x damage
u gotta skate
Re: slay the spire
no, youre right. miracle is the the lotus petal you get from watchers starting trinket.
ftr, also, when i say "rage" i mean "wrath".
its obviously a lot better with divinity, and i think divinity is a good mechanic and worth while to pursue, but it isnt nearly as consistent as wrath and i dont think you can assume youre going to be able to ragnarok under divinity when you pull it.

Re: slay the spire
her name is the watcher, but she's really more like a dancer - change stances as much as possible
u gotta skate
Re: slay the spire
i think when i looked yesterday steam said i have played for 106 hours

Re: slay the spire
frozen eye (I) is the sort of relic where even though it's good i'm hoping i don't have access to it because it's not fun to play with

Re: slay the spire
i 100% agree
i feel the same way about nylroys codex, or whatever that one is called

it's weird that he's on an 8-0 streak but if i check his twitter/youtube/twitch there's nothing on there like "zomg WR StS streak"

Re: slay the spire
this was a good turn 1 draw vs the heart
(that barricade is bottled)
(that barricade is bottled)
Spoiler!
probably the most "still had all these" heart win i've ever hadu gotta skate
Re: slay the spire
Nice. That was probably good enough for A20.
Re: slay the spire
a20 would have meant a fight against awakened one or time eater, both of which are probably very easy fights for this deck, so yeah probably
u gotta skate

Re: slay the spire

Re: slay the spire
impervious (39), impervious (78), block pot (90), entrench (178), barricade (176), headbutt (174)
so yeah, 300something
something else that was funny was going into the act 4 store with 400something gold (got the bag of marbles there because it clears artifact charges) and throwing away a dex pot for a block pot. my +block cards are 3 impervious 3 defend 1 metalicize 1 true grit, so block pot was actually better because dex doesn't do much for me (and yeah that does make oddly smooth stone amusing, though ofc it was useful earlier in the run)

Re: slay the spire
I have a friend with 2000+ hours in StS who I often see playing A1 The Ironclad
What's going on here do you think? I don't think daily climbs are A1, they wouldn't be Ascension at all, right? Is A1 just the perfect difficulty for this person to play indefinitely? Could be his kid playing, I could see a younger kid settling on a A1 forever in a way that I wouldn't expect of an adult

Juri have you made a Salad Shooter deck? That card looks fun but I have no idea how to get it going
