the 50% thing was just like, if they actually decide to do that. presumably they wouldn't

an angel who has a kind of lifesteal attack, making it super hard to kill. players need to figure out that it steals life based on a function of their current life, so to beat it they have to have the low hp or wounded players panzer it

a tunneling worm-shaped angel. it's most vulnerable just as it emerges, but players don't know where it'll emerge from. the trick is that it can't turn while underground, so it'll always emerge somewhere on the line drawn from where it's facing when it submerges

an angel that can make disc-shaped portals. it attacks by moving portals through buildings/terrain and by placing stationary portals above players, dropping the "cylindrical cutouts" on them. the portals remain open for a couple seconds at a time before closing, with a cooldown between forming new ones.

players can destroy it by using portals to get closer to it. as they close the gap, it'll try to use a portal to teleport away. by grappling it and holding it halfway in its own portal, they can destroy it by cutting it in two when the portal closes (this risks the eva's arm being cut off)

This is tougher with how damage works in AdEva. No on has hit points or a health total. Instead you take damage, and then (if you took enough damage) you'll roll a chart to see what happens to that body part. At first the results can only be so bad, but as your damage total creeps up you end up with a increasing modifier to the roll on the chart and you can lose limbs or be defeated. So I would have to make it something like the Angel can recover damage up to the damage total of the thing it's attacking or the median damage total of the players or something like that.

Combat positioning is mostly abstract in AdEva. The Angel might be in zone 1, with the players in zone 4, except one of them has run up to zone 1 and is has now created Engagement zone with it in melee. So you could kind of do this but mechanically it wouldn't really look any different from let's say a normal burrowing Angel.

This is an interesting one.

It's a world of imagination, so you can make anything work, some things are just easier to implement than others.

an angel that manifests as a shadow, on buildings, terrain, etc.

hitting the shadow damages it, so players can take that route if they want to, however if they hit the space between the shadow and the sun (aka the space where something would need to stand in order to cast that shadow) they can deal much more damage to it

The series had Leliel, where the angel looks like it's a thing but it was actually its shadow. This is solid twist on that and would be a good angel fight in a normal game, imo.

Trying to be entirely original is overrated. None of your suggestions have been bad, just some harder to implement that others.

I'm slowly working towards the possible endings for the game as well, so far we have 4* but to explain them I'll have to go into more detail about the setting so incoming longpost about my imaginary universe:
Spoiler!
It is the middle of the 23rd century. 200 years ago, a species of humanoid refugees arrived after a multi-generational trip from a pretty close star system. Their world was gone. They called themselves the Akked and they look like anime elves. They have 3 genders, an equivalent to male and female, but also one called a Bearer. They are the ones that carry the kid to term. This doesn't come up much, because they brought tech that lets any combination of parents have kids and even use artificial wombs, but it's a thing. The other notable things they brought along: Gate travel. FTL, but not instantaneous, travel between constructed gates. You have to bring the first one there through realspace. They also brought some terrforming tech. They were able to make Mars habitable after not too long and that is sort of their new home, but of course some live on Earth and on other colonies as well.

A few of Jupiter's moons were colonized, Ganymede, Io, Europa. They had just started the terraforming of Titan when disaster struck on Europa. In the process of anchoring one of the colonies to the bottom of Europa's oceans, they had evidently hit something. It's not clear to the public what happened but Europa was wiped clean. There was only one survivor, whose identity was never made public.

NERV sprang up in the wake of the Europa Disaster. Their primary base is on Titan. There's a few well populated bubble cities as the terraforming process wraps up. It's still a couple years off from being complete, but a person could survive exposure to Titan's atmosphere for maybe a day without any permanent issues.

Anyway, 15 years post Europa Disaster, NERV collects some kids, Eva pilots yada yada. They're actually living on Osiris Station, a space station built back in the day to help terraform Mars. It's basically always hanging out over whatever moon is currently being terraformed. It's a big fancy station, that has had multiple layers added to accommodate increasing staff/residents. The pilots are attending Vanguard Academy, one of the highest regarded schools in the entire Concord. (Concord is the Human/Akked Concord. The government in charge of everything outside of Earth, and also maybe Earth but they think they're in charge of themselves, you know how that goes. But people call the government the Concord, they call all of the colonies the Concord and usually even call the whole system the Concord.)

So the pilots barely have a chance to look at their Evas before OH SHIT something is attacking. They go down, fight it, win with only one Eva going down. NERV's commander lets them in on the secret that there is some kind impossibly large being buried in Titan. It was living at the bottom of Europa's oceans but something woke it up after it had been attached to one of the colony Cities. It did something that pushed the colony into space, but that brought it along. The colony and the entity entered the gate while it was pointed toward Titan. The colony was lost and the entity broke the gate as it went through, but it was so massive it got snagged on Titan's gravity well and somehow pulled itself back into realspace, but a lot worse for wear about a mile underground. They're fighting pieces of it that broke off the thing during the Disaster.

The pilots meet special contact from the Concord, a human named Yime, there to help them in any way they can. Some of the pilots get friendly and talk more with Yime who reveals they are not local. Their dad was from earth but their mom fares from another society in another part of the galaxy and tells them that the THING in titan is basically a super power ancient genetically engineered bioweapon called a World Ender. They hate all life but they hibernate a lot. Most FTL tech can wake them up, due to the substances used in such things. Other characters tell the pilots that Yime is a compulsive liar and not to be trusted.

They also meet a classmate and 3 out of the 4 pilots makes friends with this awkward Akked bearer kid named Geventsa.
So stuff has happened and I've coalesced the 4* possible endings into thus:
Spoiler!
1. Yime tells the pilots they have a plan to take out the World Ender. If the group can navigate its body and deliver a thing to its brain, it should make the brain look like a hostile to its immune system and it will killitself in short order. If they do this, Yime will have one of their friends, a cool spaceship AI come along and get them and their family (and sure their friends too) the fuck out of there and off to a nice existence in another part of the Milky Way.

2. The Concord have made a deal with another advanced civilization, the SSGS, and they are deeply interested in the Entity and the Evas. If the pilots will choose one amongst themselves (or just take this deal and let someone be chosen) they will get to live in comfort under Concord guard for the rest of their days. Whatever happens to the chosen pilot is not clear but it's probably not great.

3. NERV's Commander is sick of the outside influences of the powerful civilizations in the galaxy. He's worked out something that should let a pilot PLUG into the Entity similarly to how a pilot plugs into the Eva and take control of it long enough to use it's reality altering abilities to change a fundamental thing about the universe. The Commander wants that thing to be the Concord to be free of outside influence. It's very unclear what this would do. I imagine a sort of Angelic Days scenario where the Evas and all are no longer a thing but they're all still attending school together, etc. Eventually they were start remembering bits of the past and have to decide if this was what they wanted the universe to be or not.

4. Geventsa is not an Akked. Geventsa is essentially a T-Cell for the Creator (Elder god, World Ender, whatever). Geventsa likes the pilots though, because they're the only ones who can even see him (they only met him after piloting, no one else in the whole game every acknowledges him). He's met them before. A lot of times. Each time, whether the Creator wins or the pilots do, Geventsa has to shift to the next nearest reality that assist that Creator with the same issue. He's done this a hundred times. The thing is, he wants the pilots to win, but they rarely do. Especially when he tries to help them. Something buried deep in his consciousness causes him to make things worse for them. So he usually does nothing and hangs out until shit happens and then moves on. So, if pressed because it's not something he really wants to do, he offers to absorb the pilots. Consume them and use their natural resistance to the Creator's influence so overcome this subconscious sabotage. He can probably at that point mess the Creator up and keep it from destroying the Concord. Additionally, it would let him help in every other reality he goes on to without making things worse. So they would be sacrificing themselves here to save most other versions of themselves.

They could also do nothing, in which case the big one will wake up and destroy everything and everyone.

There are also weird combinations of these options but I'm not going to worry about figuring those out until it looks like they might head that directions.

if Bearers exist, what's the purpose of a female, biologically? A child is conceived by a female but transferred from the female to the bearer somehow?

He got that from Player of Games, a Culture novel by Iain M. Banks! In that, the males had a penis and testicles, the females had an eversible vagina and ovaries, and the "apex" had a womb. Male would fertilize the female's eggs, then the female would evert their vagina to implant the eggs in the apex, who would bear the fetus to term.

Females make eggs. The bearers kind of have their own versions of both sex (securities fraud) organs, though their external one's purpose is for collecting material.

Again, it doesn't matter much because of the tech they brought. With the GeneSyS technology, they don't need 3 people to procreate anymore. Two folks of the same sex (securities fraud) can produce a child. 7 people can pitch in and create an offspring. Much higher than that the system starts skipping participants, but the Akked tend not to care that much about lineage and mostly communally raise the kids.

Expanding on this more:
Spoiler!
So I kind of see each ending as varying degrees of selfish/unselfish. Fucking off with Yime or plugging into the entity being the more selfish and the other two being less selfish. This is assuming the characters are not happy to sacrifice one of their own or all of themselves, which isn't a given but seems a safe-ish bet.

1. Yime has actually been completely truthful with the pilots (as far as they're aware). The Collective (read: Not Culture) actually did send them off to our solar system to put thing into motion, but the primary goal was the stop the World Ender or preserve the life there as best they could manage. Yime isn't consciously aware of this, but will follow through with the pilots if they are able to pull the plan off. Denying the SSGS access to the thing and the pilots is just a bonus as far as they're concerned. I have no idea if Yime will even be alive by the endgame but the plan can be handled by their back-up and a nearby Ship if necessary.

From a metagame standpoint, my only real qualm with this option is that it gives the players a fairly simple solution to stopping the Elder God. By no means an easy one, but "get to it's brain-equivalent organ and deliver this thing and gtfo" doesn't feel right for a triple agent so deep under cover they aren't really aware of their full mission. I can add complications once they get into it, but I suppose it ought to feel a little more mission impossible from the get go?

2. The SSGS, which doesn't stand for anything, EssEssGeeEss is how the name of their galactic civilization sounds are kind of the deal I want them to feel the dirtiest taking. Beyond having to lose one of their friends, they're letting these people get access to a weird being that could easily have wiped them out. On the other hand, they are offering all kinds of technological improvements that could make everyone's lives better in so many ways. There's a strong indication that this improvements will not immediately benefit everyone, but will firstly be utilized by the people in power and eventually spread down to the less influential.

A theme running in the background of the game so far has been that knowledge/understanding of the Elder God has a kind of memetic madness attached to it. The more you understand it, the less stable your mind becomes, and this holds true for artificial minds as well. So this civilization is actively attempting to directly study it ought to set off some alarm bells. It might not, though. My metagame difficulty with resolving this one is how I decide which pilot gets taken, do I let them decide, do I not? Also how do I wrap things up? Of course I'd give them a run down of how the Concord changed but do I have things go horribly awry with the SSGS and study or what? Not sure.

3. If they pull this off, I want to have whoever plugs into it go through some wild trip. I've thought of how to describe what is going on, what things normally beyond their perception come into focus, and so on. Then finally they pick what they want to change and everyone wakes up in the new universe.

Metagame thoughts are, well, even hooking up to it's brain isn't going to tell the character what it wants. The way I see it, I don't even know what it wants. It's not really possible to understand from our perspective. If a single celled organism hooked up to a human and could suddenly perceive that human's thoughts, it would have no idea what to make of most of them. The most base ones, eat, flee, reproduce it could probably barely get a sense of but everything else would be so beyond it's comprehension that there's just no way. I think a human is effectively a single celled organism to an Elder God. You could try to understand it, but it is so beyond anything you've ever experienced that you couldn't possibly get anything but a few of the most basic thoughts and even those would be fundamentally different.

4. This is the ending I think is least likely. It's not going to be offered, they will have to pry it out of Geventsa. They'll have to plead with him to even be offered it. It's not something he wants to do it's more of a "fine, here's what's going on and why I can't help you and the only thing I can possibly do to help is horrifying so here's what I didn't want to tell you." I do think the influence thing actually goes beyond Geventsa. I think the Creator influences all life near it to some degree. Before the Europa Incident the influence was mild. Crazy impossible descriptions of Angels? Sure, that was probably it. Not like, it was angel, but it caused humans to dream up the idea of the angels. Lovecraft to, sure why not. He wasn't really a prophet though. His books didn't really cause madness because it was all guesses. The memetic madness only comes from actual confirmed knowledge being saved.

Anyway, as far as the metagame goes, this is obviously the most selfless option. Everyone is giving themselves up to save everyone else, basically. I don't have any qualms with this, I just think it's very unlikely to happen.

We're doing cyberpunk for the next game. Set in Neo Hong Kong some time after the 4th corporate war, the group will be employed by Excalibur, an insurance company. They will be agents, deployed to situations to prevent insured assets from being claimable. How they do this, either by solving the problem or ensure the thing that goes wrong in a way isn't covered, or some other workaround, that's up to them.

So I'm trying to brainstorm interesting situations for them to get thrown in.

An insured asset being a hostage seems obvious. Possibly the situation would be resolving things before a ransom is declared or something like that.
Some kind of object that's under imminent threat of being destroyed that is effectively immobile, and can't be moved away.
Probably some kind of anti-heist where they have to set up to stop a valuable from being stolen from where it's being kept.

That's sadly all I've really got so far. You all have any ideas?

the insured asset is classified information - only excaliber's ceo knows what it is. the players are directed to a location and directed to protect the entire location. they can try to defend the whole area or try to figure out where the bad guys are trying to go specifically, to make their job easier (via capturing and interrogating or seeing where they strike from, or whatever)

it could end up being one of those manilla envelope's in a vault, i dunno what secret thing you'd want on it in case the player's open it

That's good. I like the idea of them having to figure stuff out before they can even really get started or it's that much tougher.

pre-emptive strike mission: the asset is some technological prototype that cures cancer (or something similarly good) and excalibur has inside information on a terrorist group that plans to steal the technology, reverse engineer it, and make it open source. so you have to break into their hideout and do a thing:

1) eliminate the terrorists
2) plant evidence for the authorities (who would come arrest the group for you)
3) fail the mission, join the terrorists, and start PHASE 2 of the game

make them attend a mandatory very corporate training session where they have to brainstorm how they'd handle various situations which will actually equip you to deal with how theyre going to handle those situations

Nice. Knowing them, they would completely change strategies after deciding they didn't like how it went in the training. But still sounds amusing and would work well as an into session.

We are a few sessions in, people are getting a feel for the system and their characters a bit.

Their first mission was a literal practice run, being a digital simulation which stood in for their job interview. Their 2nd mission was recovering a hard drive with sensitive data on it, which went very smooth.

Now comes the time for things to get messy.

You see, guests at the exclusive Club 33 restaurant in Disney Tower have been taken hostage. Currently it is unclear what the perpetrators' demands are, though the group's Media identified one of them as an ex-pat that did most recently failed at assisting a military coup in Central America. The person researching this found it unimportant and didn't pursue further information.

The reason the group has been brought in is because one of the hostages (some important persons offspring) has a significant insurance policy on them in the event of ransom. They are tasked with preventing the asset from having a ransom requested. One of them floated the idea of taking them out, since you can't really ask for a ransom for a corpse, but that was shot down. Their intent at this stage is to cause a distraction, extract the asset and GTFO before anyone knows what's happened. They have hired a netrunner, a ex-soldier buddy and one of the city's corrupt cops to assist in this endeavor. They've asked the netrunner to get in the system and set the fire protection stuff off at the right time. One of the players with the best stealth will use this moment to try and get in there and grab the asset and get out.

I haven't decided what exactly they're up to there, but I know it's not just grabbing some rich hostages and seeing what they can get. First off, they will definitely have a netrunner of their own, better equipped than the one hired by the PCs, and will already be past the ICE. That'll be the first wrinkle. They may get sidetracked and try to figure out what is actually going on. But if they go forward with the original plan, I expect things to play out a little differently than they were anticipating with how they hostiles react to the fire system going off.

Anyway, any fun ideas for what the group is actually after? The best I've been able to think of was some kind of AI related to the house of mouse but there's lots of possibilities. Or maybe they're not taking something but putting something in. I don't know. I don't want to throw excessive effort at figuring it out, since the players may not even attempt to find out, but I'd like to have an idea so I can leave clues either way.

have it so the guy theyre getting out is actually someone that the house of mouse wants to have a stern conversation with. the guy is actually being protected by d00ds because he knows the mouse is after them and so theyre just throwing shit at the wall to see if they can get them out of the place away from their goons

this is of course all over copyright

fuck it could even just be like the kid of the guy or something because theyre really fucking sleezy
