the smallbox moving picture with sound thread (telly vision)

Probably what *this* should be called.

Bridgerton is bad and I do not recommend it.

It's a Netflix original. That's more likely than not.

I have a habit of noticing the acronyms for random branded things whenever I see them and I always chuckle "ANOS" to myself when I watch A Netflix Original Series
wow, [you]. that all sounds terrible. i hope it gets better for you

I just saw an ad for Paramount Plus

The ad showed Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, and James Corden

All over it

This is just the Disney+ play. Target a demographic and go all in.

BTW, I signed up for Hulu recently and I found all of the stuff I originally got Netflix for.

I am re watching Lost right now. Man that show was something else.

im in season 2 of billions now, and its grown on my wife and i quite a bit. in terms of a show about rich people problems and intrigue its quite a bit worse than succession, but thats an extremely high bar.

my wife and i had very opposing opinions over which of the main characters was the villian and which was the hero in season one, so that was fun and i think a sign of quality.

She really was. She was also great in Arrested Development, though in retrospect I actively dislike that entire show.

I re-watched it last year in the background when I was doing some other work and I picked up on some things I missed on my earlier watches. The show is about some truly despicable human beings doing insane things, but I noticed a certain edge of nastiness and nihilism in the proceedings. It's almost as if the writers despise the characters. There's just something off about it all.

Contrast that with Archer which is also a show about some truly despicable human beings doing insane things, but the proceedings make for a hysterically funny and highly intelligent cocktail of insanity, zeitgeist hits, and obscure cultural references that is clearly an inspired labor of love.

i think this is true, save george michael and maybe. those are the only two sympathetic main characters, because its a show about them being raised in a group of selfish to the nth degree dirt bags.

feels like a feature not a bug to me.

I never really got into Arrested Development either, and I think it might be for the reason Dantes mentioned, although it's not something I consciously realized until now. The show felt... unpleasant to me, in a way that Seinfeld or Black Books or Spaced never did (even though those shows are also about losers.)

I feel the same way about Curb Your Enthusiasm, by the way. I love Seinfeld and I tried to get into Curb at least three times, but I never managed to.

One of the things that really bothered me was they way they treated George Michael's girlfriend. Michael literally never remembering her existence, which both says a lot about what the writer's thought of her as a character and speaks to Michael as a character. What kind of man completely ignores the existence of a person, who is dating his son I might add, because she's bland. And why is that funny?

There were lot's of little things like that which really bothered me. In aggregate it ended up outweighing the good parts of the show.

i thought the anne bit was pretty funny, but i get it was mean spirited and maybe that turns some people off? i kind of think of comedies the way i think of sports--competition (meanness) is a lot of (is really) fun (funny), but it causes issues in polite society, so shove it all into something that doesn't matter so it can be enjoyed.

i also thought the actress playing anne was not unattractive, so it didnt seem that mean to me.

im sorry. i think curb your enthusiasm is probably the funniest television show ever produced. it does have a lot of play off of american, and specifically los angeles, culture, though, so maybe some of the stuff doesnt play as well for an international audience.

I absolutely cannot stand Larry David's character. I'm not sure why (I love George in Seinfeld.) Maybe it's because LD feels more "real" and less exaggerated for comic effect? I'm not sure. His constant aggrieved narcissism irritates the hell out of me.

i have a whole stand up for larry thing i could do. to be brief, ill just note that larry is not evil. he is selfish and doesnt mind hurting peoples feelings. he is also, however, preoccupied with fairness and extremely non-judgmental.

It's funny you guys mention this exact gag, because my wife and I reference it a lot. There were a lot of good gags in that show. Too bad it fell off a cliff when Netflix got their hands on it.

Yep.

I'd probably have to go with 30 Rock for sheer volume of laughs. Go watch "Tracy Does Conan" and tell me that's not one of the single most inspired half hours of television ever put together.
