‘Citizen Kane’ Lost Its Perfect Score On Rotten Tomatoes, Making ‘Paddington 2’ The New Greatest Film Of All-Time
Re: Headline of the Day
Yeah I have seen for quite a while that Casablanca has a 99 on Rotten Tomatoes
There's a movie reviewer who is aggregated on Rotten Tomatoes who thinks, Casablanca? Nah, you wouldn't wanna see that

Maybe he just thinks that whether you want to see it or not doesn't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.

Re: Headline of the Day
So apparently the review was a recently unearthed from 1941 and the reviewer was kind of dumb:Jeb Bush 2012 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 8:49 pm ‘Citizen Kane’ Lost Its Perfect Score On Rotten Tomatoes, Making ‘Paddington 2’ The New Greatest Film Of All-Time
The review’s headline is incredibly on point, given the circumstances: “Citizen Kane Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed.”
If that sounds like somebody went to the theater with rather high expectations, the review confirms as much. “You’ve heard a lot about this picture and I see by the ads that some experts think it ‘the greatest movie ever made,'” reads the review. “I don’t. It’s interesting. It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece. But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value.” The review went on to pan the film’s iconic use of shadow (“it gives me the creeps and I kept wishing they’d let a little sunshine in”), yet praised Welles in the title role (“a zealous and effective performer”).
Pour like Hemingway's last call.

Hey Dantes, do you like the Maltese Falcon? I enjoyed that one a lot too.
There's just something about movies from that era that has been lost, I'm not quite sure what. A sort of earnestness, I guess.

Re: Headline of the Day
I do like that one quite a lot.
I agree movies from that era were different. They really hadn't begun to plumb the depth of the medium yet, but they still made some crackling good entertainment. It Happened One Night, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Bringing up Baby, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Abbot and Costello movies, A Night at the Opera, The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Thin Man, I could go on....

Re: Headline of the Day
Remember when they just made movies that weren't based on IPs people already recognize? So primitive.

Re: Headline of the Day
They've always made movies that were based on other IP, they just didn't call it IP. Of the ones I listed, It Happened One Night, The Maltese Falcon, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and The Thin Man were all based on short stories, novels, or plays that were already popular at the time.
Hollywood has just taken it to extremes in the last two decades.
