I grabbed Tomb Raider (2013) while it was free on Steam because why not. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I don't usually play games like this, it's kind of more like a movie where you occasionally push buttons than a game. After playing for a few hours I headed over to Wikipedia because I was curious how it was reviewed. Reviewers gave it generally positive reviews but complained about the "ludonarrative dissonance". I didn't really consciously notice it while playing, but it kind of goes like this:

1. Watch cut scene where Lara is portrayed as a scared little girl, soaked, shivering, and probably wounded.
2. Gameplay where you deftly shoot 5 guards in the head and stealth kill a 6th, using brute strength to strangle him.
3. Go to 1.

Now that it's been pointed out to me, I cannot unsee.

I never played it, just watched a full narrated playthrough so this was less of a thing but still noticeable even then. But, yeah, game is interesting? It has some nice moments but I've never felt any need to play it myself or to ever particularly recommend it.

My favourite example of this is the GTA4 cutscene where Niko is like "No, I won't murder him. That's not a line I will cross!"

I noticed it in Celeste too, for what it's worth. There are multiple points in the middle of the level where there's some dialogue and Madeline is like, "omg, I'm so scared and insecure, what if I die on this mountain?"

Bitch, you died horribly 100 times in the past 5 minutes, it's gonna be fine.

Likewise the Batmobile in Arkham Knight fires completely non-lethal anti-panzer rounds.

haha

Just like to point out again that in the Michael Keaton Batman movie, he turns the Batmobile around on a villain henchman and incinerates the henchman with the Batmobile's exhaust

The disconnect that always gets me is when an NPC dies tragically in an RPG cutscene while I’m carrying a backpack full of heals and revives. Quit fooling around, Aeris.

IIRC the status when you fall in battle is called DOWN, not DEAD. Phoenix Down can't cure death, it can only cure severe beated-upness.

Yeah it's funny how most people don't think of using a phoenix down when Sephiroth kills Aeris, and then they actually play the entire rest of the game without her when they don't have to

In high school my friends had a kind of progressive rock band and they were looking for a name. I suggested Phoenix Down and they thought it was the most badass band name ever. Turns out there were multiple other bands already named Phoenix Down but this was in the days before everyone automatically googled everything, so whoops. I'm pissed I lost that t-shirt.

So what's the state of Guitar Hero-y games

I think they went to microtransaction garbage at about the same time they were falling out anyway, right?

I'm really interested in getting my daughter into something like this, no idea what the state of the world is though

I think my niece is in like 2nd grade or something, and apparently she could do the tutorial which is on a slow speed, but can't really handle the normal game. she also has trouble understanding that you need to hit the blocks in a specific direction

You can set all blocks to omnidirectional, a lot of songs have easy modes, and there's also a "no fail" setting where she can just flail around and have fun!

Girls Und Panzer did this but they just totally handwaved it by saying "No, it's fine, the panzers have carbon-lining on the inside so these AP rounds that are flipping tanks over will do zero harm to any of the children inside"
